Saltwater
Cape Mudge; Fishing is improving steadily at the light as we approach full-on summer salmon season. Plenty of reports coming in of Chinook being taken on Tomic plugs, flasher hoochie rigs and small spoons, either with a flasher or without. What's even more interesting than the number of salmon coming from the lighthouse area is the number of Halibut that are being caught. One report received last week told us of three Halibut being hooked, fought and brought to the boat only to be lost trying to bring them on board. The lucky ( or unlucky) anglers were in Tyee Marine to obtain heavier gear and a Halibut harpoon.

The Hump; Not quite as busy as the light with fewer fish being reported. During periods of high tidal flow, the Hump can be difficult to fish. The best times are as the ebb is ending and through to the beginning of the flood. Some anglers start their lighthouse drift at the Hump and fish the whole stretch of water between the two on the ebb.

Willow / Shelter points; Not many reports of fish being taken on the west side of Discovery Passage. There have been reports of fish being caught closer to Salmon Point, including a few Halibut.

Closer to the inlets, there have been some fish appearing at Viner Point on Read Island and at the bell buoy at the south tip of Cortes. Bute and Toba inlets are producing a few fish although the action is by no means hot and heavy yet.

Prawning remains good even with the commercial fleet commencing fishing in this area. Reminder; the daily legal sport limit for prawns is 200 per licencee. The fines for exceeding this limit are considerable, not to mention the embarrassment of being caught!
