REPORTS: There is some fishing to be had on the upper river. Flows on this upper region have been fairly stable (and dropping) for about a week now and it's currently your best local option on the main rivers. Algae is at August levels on the stretches above Rock Creek and will test your patience. The lower river is dropping fast, and with the unusually cold weather that's upon us, could potentially fish in a day or two. Near St. Regis, the Clark Fork is running 14,900 which is a drop of 700 cfs in the last 24 hours. The upper river near Turah is up about 20 cfs in the same period to 1410.

HATCHES: Streamers and caddis in the backwaters during the evenings.

FLIES: Yellow buggers. Large prince nymphs and bright red San Juan worms (or royal Wulff emergers if you prefer). Red Turck's tarrantulas with a San Juan dropper, #12 caddis close to the banks in the evenings, particularly in the backwaters.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Clark Fork is still running much colder from the run-off and is carrying lots of color. While you can always whack a fish or two on the lower river no matter WHAT the flows, fishing down there today will be work. This river's close, VERY close, but still not quite there. Give it another day or two and even slightly moderating temperatures and you'll have 2 or 3 days of very good fishing before the next push of water.
