Dennis Roden, NDOW game warden, said the lake was extremely busy over the Memorial Day weekend and everyone he checked had success for stocked rainbow trout. A few brown trout have been appearing in the catch as well.

Anglers continue to use PowerBait and live worms for the rainbows. Lures, such as small spinners, will catch rainbow as well as brown trout.

Most of the anglers who were fishing at the lake over the holiday weekend were catching rainbow trout with PowerBait. A few anglers had fair success for small crappie by fishing with micro crappie jigs. Largemouth bass that are around 8 inches in length are being caught with spinner and shallow-running crank baits.
Fishing continues to improve throughout the lake and there are signs that 2004 is shaping up to be the third consecutive year of good fishing for striped bass and channel catfish, despite the dropping water level.

In recent days boaters have had success for striped bass by fishing with Sassy Shad lures off Hemenway Point. The fish have been averaging from one to four pounds.
Other areas in the Boulder Basin where boaters have had recent success for stripers are Boxcar Cove, the 33 Hole, Boulder Beach and outside the tires at Lake Mead Marina. Anglers fishing in the Overton Arm have been taking stripers from St. Thomas, Fish Island and Stewart’s Point.

Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) biologists say that this year’s spawn of threadfin shad is underway and it appears that spawning success will at least be average. Shad are the primary source of forage for stripers and other game fish, so a good shad spawn is important to the overall health of the sport fishery.

Jim Heinrich, NDOW biologist, said that good shad spawns in 2002 and 2003 resulted in good fishing and healthy stripers. He believes that the good fishing will continue through 2004.
There has been little change in the fishing during the past week, as the action remains good above Cottonwood Cove for striped bass that weigh around a pound. Willow Beach continues to be very slow.
The large crowd that was on hand for Memorial Day weekend had a difficult time fishing on Saturday (5/29/04) due to strong winds, but by Sunday, the winds had calmed and most anglers were catching rainbow trout. The winds and cold weather have disrupted the largemouth bass fishing, but the action should improve as temperatures rise.

Channel catfish were stocked last Friday (5/28/04) in ponds at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Boulder City and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. One angler told the Nevada Department of Wildlife that the best bait to use for the catfish is Spam.
