Sol Duc River - June 6th, 2004

supplied by: [#0000ff]Fishing Northwest[/#0000ff]
FISHING: Fair
The Fly Fishing yesterday was tough duty across the board, all of the regions rivers were on the rise with the Hoh R. and Queets R. basically totally out of shape! even the Cutthroat in Sol-Duc didn't want to play. I took a little stroll into the "Bark Hole" on the lower stretch of the "Duc" to peek in on the Salmon...and there were quit a few fresh ones finning around in there but rising river conditions coupled with raging wind had them way off and uncooperative. Good/great news is that this substantial deluge we just had is going to bring in many a fresh fish for us in the upcoming week.
Sol-Duc (sole~duck) River-- Great shape today, way up from yesterday due to a major dose of agua during the night. I saw a few Sockeye in here on Friday and good friend and fellow guide Chris Senyohl did mange to pin and land a dandy Sockeye along with several big Cutthroat and two smallish but very fresh Springers. Gus Garcia had two respectable Steelhead lnded while Gerry wright another excellent local guide also managed to put the hoop under a big fresh Spring King. Another week or two and it will be very, very good fishing for those "Sockeye" and the incidental Summer Steelhead.
Note: It is strictly catch and release on ALL Wild Steelhead.

Calawah River-- Beautiful shape right now, I just looked out the back window to check the level and it honestly looks like it would be doable for a couple of folks in a 12ft -14ft inflatable. It has been months since it's been this big and there have been some gorgeous Cutthroat in here, not real big and not super numerous but plenty enough in the 8" to 14" range to keep it exciting.

FISHING: Good
It has been "The bright spot"...we've had plenty of action in the upper section recently with the fly rods. Steelhead and Dolley Varden primarily. Yesterday however it went up up up as the rain came down...no complaints though, this freshet was a God send for the rivers over here on the coast.

The Skagit (7,100 cfs) is really nothing above an incidental for hatchery steelhead. Even the Cascade River is running dirty, so the surface gig, has gone away for a bit. The Sauk (6,000 cfs and zero vis.) is totally gone as is the Suiattle. Wait until after the snow melt, and try the big canyon pools above the Whitechuck River. Pretty cool for wild rainbows and monster Dollies later this summer.

Stillaguamish River – North Fork - June 6th, 2004
supplied by: [#0000ff]Dickson Flyfishing Steelhead Guides[/#0000ff]
FISHING: Poor
North Fork Stilly: (6,000 @ Deer Creek) is completely out and will be until the weather settles. I would rate the little North Fork's fishing as "OK". We always seem to get an early squirt and this year is no different. The real 2 salt action will come in after July 4. The new vogue up there on this little stream seems to be a 14' doublehander rod, and Dink bobber and jig. Sure, I guess it's legal and must be effective or some of the Fortson Hole boys wouldn't do it but Geez.....

"Life is good again."

Our local rivers have reopened again after the May closing. Most steelhead streams I frequent in Alaska don't close. Good excuse to go north, I guess.

Jonathan & Mike have spent some Stilly time. The good news was there is a fine number of wild steelhead spawning redds in the upper river. The bad news is according to Jonathan there is also "fresh" steelhead gear hanging from the streamside sweepers where obviously the poachers have had their way. When you close rivers, you not only lose fishing opportunity, you lose your steelhead through poaching, it's the way it works. Enough said.

supplied by: [#0000ff]Dickson Flyfishing Steelhead Guides[/#0000ff]
FISHING: Fair
The Skykomish (7,700 cfs @ Gold Bar) is generally our early season bright star. This year is no different. Early hatchery fish will be beating feet (er fins) to the upper river, but there appears to be a fair number throughout the system. Waters are up but fishable. Anything below 10,000 cfs works.

RECORDED: [Image: ptcloudy.gif] 0 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Good
The Irrigation season is starting throughout the valley so we will be seeing a slow (hopefully) and steady rise in the flows of the Yakima. The lower canyon below Ellensburg is not seeing much changes, However the upper sections around Cle Elem have doubled to around 1400 CFS. Still very fishable, but rising.

The hatch activity has been light, the ever present Caddis have been regular as always. A few Yellow Sallies and PMD's and PED's later in the day

All Star Fishing Charters weekly fishing report

Area 9

Lingcod fishing is just about over. Lingcod remains open till the 15th of June. Last weeks strong tides made it hard to stay on the location, but we still managed to get limits. This weekends tides are better and there are still plenty of lingcod out there.

The best catches are still coming on the live bait.

Crabbing opened with limited catches, best area was browns bay along the shore in about 60 feet of water.

Crabbing in area 9 is open 7 days per week.

Salmon fishing in area 9 opens July 16

Area 8.2

Crabbing in area 8.2 was good this past weekend.

Although some people reported limited success there were good catches by others.

Lots of great crabbing in 8.2, the jetty just out of the Snohomish river mouth is probably the most popular and certainly very productive.

Other good spots include the shoreline from Everett to Mukilteo.

The south and north ends of Hat Island.

Only one more week till the Tulalip Special fishery opens on June 18 for salmon.

This will be 2 weekends earlier than last year. The hatchery in tulalip bay has been putting in early returning Chinook for the past few years and this run is expected to be a good one.

Area 8.1

Open for lingcod

Crabbing opens Friday June 4

North end of Camano Island is excellent.

Closed to salmon fishing, Reopens on August 1

Area 10

Opens for crabbing June 1

Closed to salmon fishing, reopens on June 16 for a catch and release fishery and then opens for catch and keep on July 1

Cedar River - June 7th, 2004
supplied by: [#0000ff]Puget Sound Fly Company, LLC[/#0000ff]
RECORDED: [Image: sunrain.gif] 66 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Excellent
The Cedar River has been almost as good as it was hyped up to be! The best water for big fish can be found from Highway 18 down to the mouth. Please stop by or call Puget Sound Fly Company at 253-839-4119, if you have any more questions.

Techniques: Nymph fishing with a strike indicator is the most productive technique. Look for 4’-8’ of “walking speed” water with some cover.

Streamer fishing is also effective. Use either a sink tip or sinking leader with a steamer fly and an erratic retrieve.

Dry fly activity is good. Look for it to improve in the evenings and mornings, with warmer weather here.

Hatches: The Cedar is surprisingly fertile and has some good insect activity. Currently we are seeing some very good ‘Yellow Sally’ (small tan/yellow stoneflies), Pale Morning Duns, and Caddis. Unfortunately the fish aren’t always looking up during these hatches. Try mornings and evenings.

Flies: Nymphs: Bird’s Nest, Tan and Brown Sparkle Pupa, Rubber Legged Hare’s Ear, Copper John

Streamers: Conehead Muddler (olive, brown, black), Rag Sculpin, Trout Bait, P.R. Spider

Dries: Yellow Sally, Tan Elk Hair, Light Cahill, PMD, Yellow Stimulator.
