REPORTS: The upper river near Darby is down about 160 cfs compared to this time yesterday while the lower river near Florence is down about 830 cfs in the same time period. The main issue with The Bitterroot right now is the volume of water. Clarity is actually pretty good, but finding soft, fishable water is tough with the flows as high as they are. As the water continues to drop throughout the week, expect better and better fishing. The West Fork has been giving up some very good topwater action lately and the main river should follow suit shortly. There are lots of bugs out and about including caddis, green drakes, salmonflies and golden stones.

HATCHES: Midges, caddis, yellow sallies, giant goldens, a few salmonflies, green drakes.

FLIES: Extended body drakes in a 10 or 12, parachute adams in both larger sizes for the drakes and march browns and in smaller sizes for baetis. Have some Goddard and elk hair caddis and some salmonflies if you go higer. Keep some smaller green and red bodied nymphs such as brassies if the fish won't play on top.

REPORTS: It's down about 300 cfs as of this morning, but still not a great option. There are some fish that'll eat, there always are, but in general, you'll have to work hard for a very few fish. As water levels continue to fall and the end of the week warms up slightly, this river will once again become a main focus for us. Right now, though, you'll be better off on either Rock Creek, The West Fork or the lower Clark Fork.

HATCHES: Salmonflies, baetis, midges, march brows, caddis, green drakes.

FLIES: Buggers, deep and slow tandem nymph rigs.

WEATHER: TODAY...MOSTLY CLOUDY THIS MORNING...WITH PARTIAL CLEARING BY AFTERNOON. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING LATER THIS AFTERNOON. HIGHS 70 TO 75. EAST WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH. REPORTS: You might have some decent fishing on the mid to lower river today. The section river near St. Regis has begun to drop hard and is down about 2500 cfs in the past 24 hours. The upper river above Milltown is still in terrible shape due mainly to loose algae which is thick enough in the water column as to prevent even dryfly fishing on this section. Look for streamers and tandem nymph rigs to be your best options on the lower Clark although you'll probably have some dryfly opportunities here and there as well. If you do end up with some fish looking up, make sure to have green drakes and caddis immitations. If you're just prospecting, rogue goldens with big prince nymph or San Juan droppers will be a good starting place. Keep in mind today's supposed to be fairly windy again and that the river below Tarkio is usually less affected by afternoon winds than say . . . hmmm, PETTY TO REST STOP!!

HATCHES: Caddis, march browns (still), green drakes, giant golden stones, salmonflies, PMDs.

FLIES: Tan or yellow buggers. Large prince nymphs and bright red San Juan worms, Rogue stones (orange and gold), button emerger green drakes, drake cripples, extended body drakes, elk hairs and Goddards in a #12, smaller parachute Adams (like a 16 or 18).

WEATHER: TODAY...MOSTLY CLOUDY THIS MORNING...WITH PARTIAL CLEARING BY AFTERNOON. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING LATER THIS AFTERNOON. HIGHS 70 TO 75. EAST WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH. TONIGHT...CHANCE OF SHOWERS... ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS IN THE EVENING MOSTLY CLOUDY. LOWS 46 TO 51. THURSDAY...SHOWERS LIKELY... HIGHS 58 TO 63... WEST WINDS 10 TO 20 MPH IN THE AFTERNOON. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: We're coming up on the next dip in this year's runoff rollercoaster. There are more hills to come, however, so enjoy this next window of lower flows and willing fish!

REPORTS: Still the best bet in the area. This cooler weather has the flows dropping and is getting the green drakes out a bit more. The lower river is running 1030 as of this morning while the Middle Fork is also down now to 294 cfs. Wade fishing is still not a great option in general on the creek, but give it another 2 or 3 days and it'll be fine. A boat is the way to go up here. In the cloud cover the fish have been looking for mayflies more so than the big stoneflies. During the midday period when the fish have been willing to eat the bigger bugs, they've recently become fairly selective about wanting golden stones over the salmonflies. This cloud cover is also providing very good conditions for ripping streamers off the banks. Rock Creek remains a very good option locally.

HATCHES: Midges, caddis, green drakes, salmonflies, golden stones, PMDs, baetis.

FLIES: Bigger attractor or stonefly dries with red San Juan worm droppers. More realistically sized mayfly offerings such as parachute Adams, comparaduns or cripples in the 14 to 16 range. Green drake cripples or duns in 10s or 12s. Slow moving streamers will also be a good option. Larger stonefly nymphs with bright red San Juan worm droppers.

WEATHER: TODAY...MOSTLY CLOUDY THIS MORNING...WITH PARTIAL CLEARING BY AFTERNOON. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING LATER THIS AFTERNOON. HIGHS 70 TO 75. EAST WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The salmonfly hatch still has a long way to go on Rock Creek. It will be fishable for weeks to come yet.

Flows at Gallatin Gateway are 2650 C.F.S. These are high flows on the Gallatin and the river below the Taylor's Fork is really only good for kayaking and whitewater rafting for the time being. If you want to fish the Gallatin you will want to travel to the area above the Taylor's Fork or inside of Yellowstone National Park. The upper portions of the river are flowing high but there good enough clarity to catch some fish. Nymphing is the mainstay on the upper reaches with larger stonefly imitations trailed with either a san juan worm or large bead head prince. The river should start to drop some over the next few weeks but I would not expect the fishing to pick up on the Gallatin for at least a couple of more weeks.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Prince #6-10, RL Stone #6-8, Yuk Bug #6-8, BH Twenty Incher #6-10, San Juan Worm #10, Turd Blossom Special #6-8

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1280 1640 C.F.S. and dropping. The river took a large jump in flows on Monday and it has been decreasing on a daily basis. The clarity remains good as of today with about 3 feet of clarity. The Salmonfly hatch is in full swing however it has been very sporadic this year. The adults have only been in small pockets this year and we have not seen the hatch really blow up with bugs everywhere. Keep your eyes in the bushes as you hike around the river and if you find some adults flying in the air or in the bushes give the dry flies a try. Nymphing has been good on the entire river and concentrate on fishing the larger nymphs in the deeper pockets and in the faster water inside of the Bear Trap Canyon Wilderness area. The streamer fishing has been very good on the river outside of the canyon. It is most likely going to slow a bit as the water continues to drop. The higher water spread the fish out a bit and moved them to the banks where the anglers fishing from boats could target them a little easier. The crayfish are also molting so dead drifting a crayfish imtation has been productive. The fish really like the crayfish when they molt because there shells are soft and they are easier to digest. There has also been some nice hatch activity that is not centered around the Salmonflies. Pmd's, Caddis and Yellowsallies have been hatching in very good numbers and if you want some good dry fly fishing you can have a ball matching the hatch. The river should stay in pretty good shape, however the upper river has been very dirty and there is a real good possibility that the muddy water could make it's way through the lake and turn the lower river into mud as well. We will update this report if there are any changes.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1130 C.F.S. The river is green above the West Fork of the Madison. Below the West fork the river is really dirty and pretty unfishable. If you want to fish the upper try the area near Reynolds pass or between the lakes. Cabin and Beaver creek are both running high and dirty so if you fish between the lakes there is only the short stretch of river that is clear until Cabin creek enters the river. There are some midges and baetis hatching on the upper reaches of the river but the clarity is not quite good enough for the fish to be real interested in feeding on the surface. Nymphing has been good though in the greenish water and keep your fly patterns dark in color so that the fish can make out the fly easier.

FISHING: Good
The Flows at Melrose Montana are 1410 C.F.S. The Salmonfly hatch flew up the river in record time this year and the fishing for the hatch was for the most part a bust. There are still bugs out flying but the bulk of the hatch flew the river system within a few days. It is time to look past the salmonflies and start concentrating on the other hatch activity that takes place in the early summer months. Yellowsallies, goldenstones, pmd's and caddis will dominate the hatch activity and you can have some great dry fly fishing on the Bighole after the Salmonfly hatch is over. It doesn't appear that the outlook for the summer is too promising on the Bighole so if you like to fish it you should get over there while it still is flowing decent flows and the fish are happy.

FISHING: Fair
The Flows at Barrett's Diversion Dam are up to 451 C.F.S. The flows are up from the need for irrigation downstream and this is a great time to fish the Beaverhead. The high flows have moved some of the fish around and they have been feeding more actively due to more food being pushed their way. Nymphing is still the most productive fishing right now. If you are going to fish the tailrace area concentrate on midges and scuds fished on long leaders. If you fish the river below the high bridge you can fish larger flies and get away with heavier tippets.

Fly Pattern Suggestions :Red San Juan Worms, Red Sawyer PT #18-20, Grey Scud #14-16, Olive Scud #14-16, Red Midge Larvae #18-22, Olive Midge Larvae #18-22, Olive Hares Ear #16-18, Green Weenie #18-20.

Paradise Valley Spring Creeks - June 6th, 2004
supplied by: [#0000ff]Yellowstone Angler[/#0000ff]
FISHING: Good
The Paradise Valley spring creeks are now in a transition period. There are still fishable numbers of spring Baetis on some days, but we are well past the peak of this hatch.

Even if the hatch is light, Pheasant Tails, Thin Baetis Nymphs or our new Olive Epoxy Biot Nymph in #18-20 are effective, as they are good imitations of all of the summer mayfly nymphs in the creeks. Once the hatch gets going, Baetis Sparkle Duns, CDC Duns, and No Hackles are all great choices for dun patterns.

Midge hatches will provide some surface activity at this time of year. There is usually some emergence mid-morning and again late in the afternoon and early evening, but look for midges any time that there is cloud cover. During the hatch, try fishing a variety of surface emergers like René Harrop's CDC Biot Midge Emergers and our Z-lon tailed CDC Midge Emerger. These small gray midge emergers can be tough to see, but you can always use these in combination with a more visible pattern like a CDC Hanging Midge, or simply fish them with a small yarn indicator.

The fish feed heavily on both midge larvae and midge pupae as well as surface emergers, so be sure to have some of these in your box. The Miracle Nymph, Green Krystal Midge Larva, and any of the Lace Midge Larva patterns can be very effective.
