Alewives Population Declines
#1
According to an arcticle in the Courant, the river herring population has been dropping since 1990. In 2000 Ct. banned any fishing of river herring in all state waters. RI and Mass have the same problem, though you can still take some fish.RI you can take 24 fish a week and no fishing for them sun.-tues. Some believe the abondance of stripe bass may have something to do with it. Some think that due to the long range the herring have that the stripers may not be the cause. Is this another sign of over fishing? Not by the recreational fishermen. But just like the fluke and flats we take hit on size to bring back the stock.
