The fishing derby runs one day only, with prizes ranging from fishing gear to a twelve foot Jon boat with electric motor. Entry fee has been reduced this year to $10 each, broadening the appeal of the derby and making it affordable for most families.

The day starts with a pancake breakfast. Consession open all day and there is an adult beverage garden. Join Backroads Country Rock Music for a dance Saturday night, starting at 8:00 pm.

Derby entry deadline is 12:00 noon, Saturday July 10. Advanced tickets can be purchased by phone at (250) 373-2515. Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Entries are also available at Surplus Herby's in Kamloops. In Savona, tickets are available at Dey's Centre, Savona General Store and the Savona Hotel - and also at Bob's Recreational Sales in Cache Creek.

There are no hidden weight prizes‹weigh-in contenders only. To qualify for the grand prize, contestants must attend the prize giveaway ceremony, held after final weigh-in.

This year, Canadian Power and Sail Squadron will have a booth at the derby boat launch, offering complimentary splicing of anchor or mooring lines. This volunteer organization is dedicated to increasing public awareness and knowledge of boating safety, and has been offering boating courses since 1938.

David Hill, member of the Kamloops squadron, says the booth will be run by squadron members from 05:00 to 17:00, final weigh-in time. LAKE ACCESS

From Kamloops, head west along the Trans Canada Highway for 40 km to Savona. There are two turnoffs into town, and located on the right (north) side of the highway. Follow either road into town, to the Savona Public Beach, beside the Savona Hotel. There is public boat launch at Savona.

Accommodations are available at the hotel, or you can pull into Steelhead Provincial Park, located two minutes from town. The park has 42 campsites, and a cartop boat launch . Campsites are available on a first come, first served basis.
