Region 5 Fisheries - Fishing Hotline
#1
Updated - July 16, 2004
Greetings and thank you for calling the NYS DEC Region 5 fishing and hunting hotline. This is the July 16th edition. Support for this hotline is provided by the Franklin County Tourism Bureau.
The weather will be in the low 70's with chances of thunderstorms through the weekend.
Bass fishing is really great now. Try using crayfish as bait or lures such as the Super Spook Junior, Baby Bass, or tube jigs in watermelon pepper, pumpkin pepper, and green. Work these baits or lures around rock bluffs and drop offs in 10 to 15 ft of water. A weightless Texas rigged Senko worm is also good; use it like soft jerk bait.
Pike fishing is really good on Raquette River. Smallmouth bass and yellow perch fishing has been good around the rocky shoals of Lower Saranac Lake with live bait producing the best. Schools of small bass are also chasing yellow perch fry near the surface and can be caught on small streamers. Pike fishing has been slow on the Saranac Chain.
Fishermen are catching salmon, bass and lake trout on Lake Champlain. Many fishermen are complaining about the lamprey eels on Lake Champlain.
On Lake George the bass fishing is great in 20-30 feet of water using crayfish, minnows and Gary Yamamoto Senko worms. Lake trout can be caught with whirly Les Davis trolling rigs followed by a flat fish lure. A couple 18 inch salmon were caught on the lake this week. A 14 lb pike was caught last weekend.
On Lake Lonely the Guys and Gals Tournament was held last weekend and many bass were caught. It is suggested you use Texas rigged Senko worms to catch bass. Bass can also be caught using spider jigs, Yamamoto Hula grubs, jig and pig combos with plastic trawler; and spinner baits. Largemouth bass and crappie are hitting in the thick weeds. Target weed beds with small twister and hair feather jigs and cast to in pockets in the weeds.
On Saratoga Lake bass can be caught with Texas rigged worms and on spider jigs. In the early morning and early evenings, try topwater baits or soft plastic jerk baits like flukes. To catch panfish and walleye, use nightcrawlers on a hook below a bobber. For bigger fish look for rock piles and drop offs and jig a piece of nightcrawler slowly across both.
Prior to heading out, anglers should be sure to check the current fishing regulations for the water they plan on fishing. Numerous exceptions to the statewide regulations exist in each DEC region. Regulations can be found in the 2002-2004 Fishing Regulations Guide.
