Oregon Fisheries Update
July 30th – August 5th, 2004

The Buoy 10 fishery is underway! Before it gets red hot and rolling, take advantage of a professional in the field and get a copy of technical report #4- Columbia River Estuary Salmon Fishing for the Bank and Boat Angler for the upcoming Buoy 10 season! This report and several more are available from our secured web page at: here.

Ocean fishing out of Astoria was sporadic earlier in the week but should become more consistent as coho begin to stage for the river run. The Buoy 10 fishery opens up on Sunday but don't expect gangbuster fishing. There is a significant tide series however and the coho numbers on the opener may surprise us.

Catch and release sturgeon fishing will be a decent back up option for anglers on the lower Columbia. You may want to bring the crab gear as well to ensure a take-home treat. The lower river has been crabbing well.

Lower Columbia summer steelhead fishing should pick up again as well with the minus tide series beginning on the 29th. It should stay good through the weekend.

The upper river (from Wauna to Bonneville Dam) closes to retention 7 days/week starting on the 1st of August. Catch and release fishing remains open and oversize fishing is improving from previous weeks. The salmon and steelhead fishing in the gorge is poor however due to warm water conditions.

Tillamook offshore salmon are still producing viable catches although the fishery is definitely sporadic. The coho are clearly putting on some pounds!

Wilson and Nestucca River summer steelheading remains for the stealthy steelheader with no signs of improving river conditions- hey, but some anglers like a low, clear river!

Umpqua shad fishing is finished while smallmouth angling remains excellent. Summer steelhead fishing is good and only getting better on the Rogue River. Chinook are nailing Rogue River Spinners in the Bay.
The Clackamas River is a poor bet for steelhead, the Sandy is fair. Plenty of steelies are present in the North Santiam but remain difficult to catch. South Santiam anglers are faring somewhat better.

Waters being stocked in the Willamette Zone this week include the Breitenbush River, Leaburg Lake, Upper McKenzie River, Quartsville Creek and the North Fork Santiam River. In the Deschutes watershed, Badger Lake, Deschutes-5, Fall River, Lake of the Woods, Shevlin Pond, Spring Creek and Three Creeks will all receive rainbow trout.
