Take A Break At A South Dakota State Park Special Event

PIERRE, S.D. – No time to get away? Take a mini vacation this weekend at a South Dakota state park. Several special events will take place across the state on Saturday, Aug. 7 that offer activities for the entire family. [ul] [li]River Man/River Woman Triathlon, Farm Island Recreation Area near Pierre at 7 a.m. Compete by yourself or split activities between a team. Race includes a .4-mile swim, 18 miles of biking and a 3.5-mile run. Prizes will be awarded to winners in three age divisions. Registration fee is $25 for an individual and $40 per team, plus $5 if registering the day of the event. Bicycle helmets and skullcaps required. [li]Disc Golf Tournament, Oakwood Lakes State Park near Bruce at 9 a.m. Celebrate the opening of the new disc golf course at its inaugural event. Play two 18-hole rounds for an entry fee of $15. [li]"Walking of the Forts" Walk in the Park, Randall Creek Recreation Area near Pickstown at 10 a.m. Join us for a walking tour of Fort Randall and the Fort Randall Chapel. Learn about the buildings and everyday life at the 19th century fort, which is located adjacent to the park. There is no cost to participate, although a Park Entrance License is required to enter the recreation area. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and insect repellant. [li]"A Walk on the Dark Side" Walk in the Park, Lake Poinsett Recreation Area near Arlington at 8:30 p.m. Cool off with a night walk as we learn the history of the park and the area. The Walk in the Park programs are part of a series of educational, guided hikes held throughout the year in South Dakota state parks, recreation areas and nature preserves. Park staff and volunteers lead the programs, which are co-sponsored by the SD Department of Health.
