Walk In The Park Programs Round Out August Weekends

A guided nature walk on the island will reveal interesting facts about the beaver that call the island home, as well as its other inhabitants. Info: (605) 773-2885. [/size] [li][size 2]Hiking Through Years of History[/size][size 2], Pickerel Lake near Waubay. On this mid-morning hike at 10 a.m., Saturday. Aug. 14, visitors will learn the history of the area and Pickerel Lake. Info: (605) 486-4753. [/size] [li][size 2]It’s a Bird’s World[/size][size 2], Lake Herman State Park near Madison at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 21. Learn about the various birds found in the area and how they live. Info: (605) 256-5003. [/size] [li][size 2]Colors of Nature[/size][size 2], Big Sioux Recreation Area near Brandon at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 21. Nature is truly full of color. [/size] [li][size 2]Shannon’s Survival Hike[/size][size 2], Lewis and Clark Recreation Area near Yankton at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 28. Learn the adventure of Private Shannon, who became lost for two weeks near this area while on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Find out how he survived and what edible plants he encountered while he was separated from the group. Info: (605) 668-2985. [/size] [li][size 2]Dam the Cheyenne River[/size][size 2], Angostura Recreation Area near Hot Springs at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 28. [size 2]Walk in the Park programs are open to all ages. There is no cost to participate, though a park entrance license is required. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and insect repellent.[/size]
[size 2]The Walk in the Park programs are part of a series of educational, guided hikes held throughout the year in South Dakota state parks, recreation areas and nature preserves. Park staff and volunteers lead the programs, which are co-sponsored by the S.D. Department of Health.[/size]
