Oregon Fishing Update

[font "verdana,arial,helvetica"][size 2]Oregon Fisheries Update

August 13th - August 19th, 2004

The Buoy 10 fishery is underway! Before it gets red hot and rolling, take advantage of a professional in the field and get a copy of technical report #4- Columbia River Estuary Salmon Fishing for the Bank and Boat Angler for the upcoming Buoy 10 season! This report and several more are available from our web site.

The Buoy 10 fishery is low on effort and catch. Anglers are still trying to scratch out a chinook from the river but they aren't having much luck. The water is warm and we are still a week away from the first good numbers of fish to enter the river. The ocean remains the best option this week although catch rates have dropped out of Astoria. The action should pick back up again as coho and chinook begin to stage off the river mouth.

The Columbia River is open for catch and release sturgeon fishing only. The best bet for this fishery remains near the rivers mouth in the deeper channels using herring for bait. The crabbing is still good in the lower Columbia River.

Oversized fishing in the gorge is still good and shad are still running past the dam but not in fishable numbers. Floater shad is the bait of choice.

The Willamette is also closed to the retention of sturgeon until October 1st.

Steelhead are passing Bonneville Dam in good numbers which may stimulate upriver fisheries but the lower Columbia plunkers will be hung out to dry due to warm river temperatures.

Garibaldi ocean salmon fishing showed improvement this week but may drop off again as fish head north in preparation for Columbia River entry. A few nicer chinook salmon are in the catches but smaller feeder chinook dominate the deeper water. These fish are not really worth your time so target coho in closer to shore. 165 foot was the magical number on the 10th.

Summer steelheaders remain challenged on the Wilson and Nestucca Rivers. Keep your offerings dark and present them during low light time frames.

Winchester Bay, Coos Bay and the Coquilee River tidewater have been producing some chinook at times. Offshore salmon fishing on the South coast has been spotty. Rogue River Bay has been fair while summer steelhead are being taken on the upper river.

Ocean crabbing closes on the Sunday the 15th. Most ocean crab are soft anyway.

Inland rivers offer little in the way of steelheading as we endure yet another week of warm temperatures and low, clear water. The Clackamas has been very slow while a few steelhead are falling to bait fishermen on the upper Sandy. Water is warming on the Santiams and steelheading is only fair.

Kokanee fishing has been good at times at Paulina, Wickiup and Green Peter to trollers. Odell has been fair. Carmen Reservoir, Leaburg Lake, the Upper McKenzie River, Badger Lake, Deschutes-5, Devils Lake, Fall River, Shevlin Pond and Spring Creek have been stocked with rainbow trout this week.
