Early Fall Canada Goose Season To Open, Two Units Begin Sept. 1
#1
PIERRE, S.D. – Two of South Dakota’s three early fall Canada goose units will open Sept. 1, and hunters should note that some unit dates were modified from last year.
Unit A changed from a length of 15 days to six days, and the length of Unit B changed from 26 days to 24 days.
"Although this year’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service aerial breeding survey shows a population decrease from last year’s 130,000 resident Canada geese, observations still indicate a large goose population in eastern South Dakota," said GFP Regional Law Specialist Dave Wicks of Watertown. "Goose production for this year is also expected to be less than normal, mainly because of a reduced wetland base."
Even with the goose population decline, Wicks noted that department staff are still actively engaged with resident Canada goose damage management programs.
Available units and dates include: [ul] [li]Unit A, Sept. 1-6, Campbell, McPherson, Brown, Spink, Edmunds, Walworth and Faulk, open to residents and nonresidents. [li]Unit B, Sept. 1-24, Marshall, Roberts, Day, Grant, Clark, Codington, Hamlin and Deuel, open to residents and nonresidents. [li]Unit C, Sept. 11-24, Beadle, Kingsbury, Brookings, Sanborn, Miner, Lake, Moody, Hanson, McCook, Minnehaha, Turner, and Lincoln open to residents only. [/li][/ul]
Nonresidents can apply online at www.sdgfp.info or can use the 2004 fall waterfowl application to apply for Unit 100C-33. The nonresident license costs $45, and the federal waterfowl stamp is also required. Obtaining one of these licenses does not affect eligibility for other nonresident fall waterfowl licenses.
Residents will need a small game license, migratory bird certification stamp and federal waterfowl stamp.
