Cherokee Trap Netting Results - 2003
#1
We trap netted for crappie on Cherokee Reservoir from October 6-15. Our 106 net sample consisted of 530 black crappie, 20 blacknose black crappie, and 116 white crappie.
A very good number of young-of-the-year (2003 spawned) black and white crappie were collected and our catch rate of these newly spawned crappie was the greatest observed in the past 5 years (Figure 3). Good spring rains and high water levels positively influenced the quality of the 2003 spawn.
Adult crappie numbers are not what they were 10 years ago, but with this great 2003 spawn, the number of harvestable size crappie (>10-inch) should improve in the next 2-3 years.
It will take several more years of successful spawning to get crappie numbers back to where we would like them to be. Stocking can never achieve the results that a good natural spawn can and we only hope environmental conditions continue to cooperate like they did in 2003.
