Salt Waters [ul] [li]Saltwater fishing for halibut, lingcod and rockfish was reportedly excellent last week, with halibut being taken on both jigged lines and troll gear (fished at 60-80 feet). [li]Trolling for both king and silver salmon has been phenomenal, with reports of many anglers reaching their daily bag limit for silver salmon in less than an hour. Buoy #4 and the strait between Long and Woody islands are excellent locations to troll for silvers. [li]King salmon are also being taken at these areas, as well as off Cape Chiniak and Cape Gravelle. Silver Salmon [ul] [li]Silver salmon are beginning to return to Kodiak fresh waters. The earliest returns occur on Afognak and Shuyak islands. Popular fisheries include Litnik (Afognak) Lagoon, Pauls and Discovery bays, as well as various bays around Shuyak Island. [li]Silver salmon on the Kodiak Road System peak in mid-September. The Buskin, Olds, Pasagshak and American rivers as well as Rosyln, Salonie, Chiniak and Monashka creeks are all popular areas to target silvers. The silver salmon count at the Buskin weir as of August 16 was 400 fish. Annual counts on the Buskin average 9,000 fish.[/li][/ul]
Pink Salmon [ul] [li]Pink salmon returns are peaking in streams along the Road System and are still showing up along beaches in front of streams. Ocean beaches near Myrtle, Chiniak, Roslyn, Sargent and Russian creeks are good places to fish for bright silvery pinks. [li]As of August 16, more than 100,000 pink salmon have passed the Buskin River weir, which has an average escapement of 83,000 pinks during even years.[/li][/ul]
Dolly Varden [ul] [li]Large numbers of Dolly Varden continue to enter freshwater drainages along the Road System to feed and spawn. Some of the more popular places to fish for Dolly Varden include the Buskin, American and Olds rivers, and Salonie Creek. [li]Remember that during the August 1-September15 salmon fishing closure, upriver sections of Road System drainages are still open to anglers targeting Dollies.[/li][/ul]
