Rio Chama River - August 21st, 2004
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Poor
Stream Flow Conditions [click here]

Chama River Watershed: This poor river! Water czars move to the beat of municipal water demand, so dam gates at El Vado and Abiquiu are being opened and shut every few days. Flows double or triple in a matter of a couple hours (no gradual ramping), so expect murky conditions and disturbed fish after sudden changes. Game and Fish is still stocking below El Vado Dam, but try the upstream areas for clearer water between storms.

San Juan River - August 29th, 2004
supplied by: Sandstone Anglers
FISHING: Great
Water Levels and Flows [click here]

The San Juan is at 800 cfs with 3 -4 feet visibility

FLOWS--800 CFS

CONDITIONS--fluctuating with 3-4 feet visibity

HATCHES - Midges and a few Baetis

FLIES -
Zebra and Bumblebee pupa size 24
Thread body cdc baetis grey and chocolate size 22
Tav's Threadbody with legs chocolate and gray size 22
Mono Midge, gray, olive/black and gray/black size 24
Tav's Big Mac olive, brown and gray size 22
Red and olive larva size 20-24
Parachute Adams size 22-24
Hoppers size 12
Tav's single midge size 24
Tav's GG size 20

FISHING CONDITIONS - The river has been at 800 cfs and is stable for the time being. The fishing is still good to excellent and the hatches are good. Look for the midges( mono midge, big mac) hatching everywhere to be the main diet. A few baetis are hatching, but with the higher flows the most active fish are in slow water and eating midges. Dry fly fishing has been pretty good, especially with midge clusters.

14-DAY FORECAST - Summer is here, and we are getting into our thunderstorm season. Bring your rainjacket. The fishing is always good, but right now the fishing is excellent. We are seeing a real good number of big fish and the sight fishing is getting better! A 30" 12 lbs rainbow was caught recently on Tav's Big Mac! Come see why the San Juan is the hottest fishing in the southwest!

Jemez Area Streams - August 29th, 2004
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Good
Jemez Area Streams: Slightly cooler weather is good news for the meadow areas. Parachute dries and light tippets for late summer fish.

Valle Caldera National Preserve: Very good. Rubber-legged hoppers and black ants in the morning followed by smaller parachute dries, ants, beetles and only-the-leader-can't-see-the-fly casts over the bank edges will get as many fish as you can imagine. Trouble with vans means you should pack light and expect a tight ride.

Valle Vidal: Little change. Flows are staying a bit high with better casters rewarded for getting casts tight to the banks. It's been erratic, though, so check flows before you head out on our "Links page" . Fishing has been good at Shuree but not for lunkers. This area is all "special trout water"; please check all the regs before visiting.

Parts North: Both the Rio Grande and Conejos in Colorado have been yielding some nice stories lately, although water levels are late-summer normal and hatches are tapering off. Sneak away for a quick trip if you can!

Rio Grande River - August 29th, 2004
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Poor
Stream Flow Conditions [click here]

Chama River Watershed: Not recommended. There are some big fish being caught on worms in muddy water below El Vado Dam, but flows are being jacked around so much the visibility will make wading and fishing difficult.

Pecos River - August 29th, 2004
supplied by: [#000000]The Reel Life[/#000000]
FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Conditions [[#000000]click here[/#000000]]

Pecos River: No surprises here. Water is just under 50cfs and clear, so fish are getting a good look at potential offerings. Small flies and light tippets are useful in making drag-free presentations.
