EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.
FRENCHMAN LAKE: Fishing has been really good. Most being caught in 4-10-feet of water with intermediate lines, long leaders and nymphs in sizes 12 to 16. Try Rickard’s stillwater nymphs, sheep creek specials, bird’s nests and silver copper johns. Mornings have been best, but fish are also being caught just before dark. Bank fish with bobbers and sliding sinkers as there are weeds. Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
LAKE DAVIS: There are plenty of fish being caught all over the lake. Most are being caught on sinking lines slow stripping wooly buggers. Smaller flies such as bird’s nests and sheep creek specials fished in the same manner have also been good. Look for 6-15-feet of water and let your flies get down close to the bottom. Mornings have been best. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com. Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251. www.dollardsmarket.com. Email — dollards@psln.com.
TRUCKEE RIVER: The upper section between Tahoe City and Truckee has very little water. Flows coming out of Lake Tahoe are 37 c.f.s. Fish are spooky in that section. Some baetis hatches mid-morning. Nymphing with small baetis nymphs has been effective. The section between the Boca bridge and Reno has a lot of water. Nymphing crayfish and stonefly patterns has been working well. There are a lot of hoppers around also. Spinners doing well with Panther Martins, yellow with red dots or albino. Drifting salmon eggs also working well. East of Sparks in the Lockwood/Patrick area has been good. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.
LITTLE TRUCKEE: Flows have been at 31 c.f.s. for two weeks now. Fish are starting to head back into Boca Reservoir. The low water cannot handle the fish population and there is not enough food for the fish. The fall kokanee and brown trout run will also be affected by the lower water. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
CARSON RIVER: Flows getting very low on the East Carson. Be stealthy. Deeper holes are holding the biggest concentrations of fish now. Nymphing in the morning has been good. Some trico’s and baetis hatching during the day. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
BOCA, PROSSER and STAMPEDE: Fishing has been good for kokanee. Go down about 20 feet with a dodger and kokanee bug. Good numbers, but small, in the 9-11-inch range. Early mornings best. Also seeing a few trout with nightcrawlers and flashers. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.
SPARKS MARINA: A lot of carp came out last week. Also some trout. Powerbait and nightcrawlers working as well as anything. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.
SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 9,000 c.f.s. Corning, Calif. Fishing for kings is picking up. More salmon moving up the river. More than 300 fish passed over the Red Bluff Diversion Dam on Monday. Using Flatfish T-50's, and bouncing roe.
Redding to Anderson: Fly-fishing for rainbow trout is still good with 15-25 fish days. Great bug hatch in afternoon. Mornings and afternoons productive. Rainbows up to 6 ponds. Lures working well include Micro Mayfly No. 16 and Fox's pupahs.
Guide services and information: Hank Mautz Professional Guide Service, (800) 355-3113. Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Kirk Portocarrero, (800) 670-4448 or (530) 221-6151. Web site: www.sacriverguide.com.
WILDHORSE: Bass, channel cats and perch are hitting well, but trout are not. Many 12-inch wipers coming out. The river below the dam is still good for trout. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or email: dunns@direcway.com.

EAGLE LAKE: Following some inclement weather, several limits were caught from the jetty. Most averaged 2½ to 3 pounds or better. Many have been caught using Kastmasters. Nightcrawlers have also been working well. For trolling and still-fishing from boats, the best fishing continues to be in the deep water at the south end of the lake at about 20-30 foot depths. Still-fishing is best using nightcrawlers under slip bobbers. Trolling has been doing well with a variety of Needlefish, trolling flies, Rainbow Runners, Kastmasters or similar. The best areas continue to be Eagles Nest, Pikes Point, out from the Eagle Lake Marina Jetty and Wildcat Point. Many boats have been working the youth camp area also. The best times continue to be early morning hours with some mid-day and evening action.
Ample camping is available in the pines at the south shore of Eagle Lake with more than 200 campsites available on a first-come, first serve basis. For camping information at Eagle Lake, call the U. S. Forest Service at (530) 257-4188. For reservations, call; toll free, (877)-444-6777. For current information on fishing conditions, call Eagle Lake Marina at (530) 825-3454.
ANTELOPE LAKE: Bass fishing is good here. Try senko’s and crank baits by the dam. Also trolling with worms and drifting Rapala’s. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.
CROWLEY LAKE: Windy weather prevailed last week hampering fishing. During the calmer periods midge fishing with black/grey midge pupa in 9-10 feet of water has been good. The fish are also chasing perch minnows so streamer flies like Matukas or Zonkers have been productive as well. Barbless artificials only. Limit is two fish ,18-inches or bigger. www.performanceguideservice.com.
LOWER OWENS: Water flow is 90 c.f.s. Flows have been changing daily and fishing has been on the tough side as the fish have been unable to settle. Some action on trico duns in the morning, then small baetis duns mid-day. Pretty slow in the evenings. www.performanceguideservice.com
JUNE LAKE LOOP: Grant Lake has been producing some nice brown trout near the Rush Creek inlet according to local lake regular. He suggests slow trolling an olive matuka with a full sink line in 10-15-feet of water. www.performanceguideservice.com.
EAST WALKER: Water flow is 123 c.f.s. Windy conditions last week churned up the reservoir clouding the water in the river and turning off the bite. Things are beginning to calm and the water is clearing. www.performanceguideservice.com.
UPPER TWIN LAKES: Pat Barr from Dayton caught a 7-pounder trolling an olive wooly bugger. Bob Huntley from Carson City used a nightcrawler to catch a 5-pound, 3-ounce rainbow. Mono Village Resort (760) 932-7071.
LOWER TWIN LAKES: Fishing is pretty good with several limits coming out. Yellow Sierra Gold, gold or brass lures and nightcrawlers all working well. Kokanee are hitting 40-feet down on small fluorescent orange or red lures. Twin Lakes Resort (760) 932-7751.
SOUTH LAKE: Fishing picked up last week with the Alpers finally coming out in big numbers. Several large trophy rainbows coming out every day. Trout Traps or Stingers have been the best for larger fish behind the island. Anglers are parking by the inlet streams and jigging or using nightcrawlers. DFG and Tim Alpers are both continuing to stock. Some good action with Thomas Buoyants close to the surface or trolling with a nightcrawler or deep with a Cultiva have been doing good by the Rockslide area. Shore fishing has been pretty good by the dam or in Boiler Cove. Trout Traps or nightcrawlers are best. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
BISHOP CREEK: The fishing also picked up on Bishop Creek. The water level has remained good and with the DFG and Alpers stocking anglers are bringing out nice limits. Nightcrawlers and Powerbait have been doing great with some action starting with salmon eggs. Fly-fishing has been very productive with Matukas in the big holes or Sierra Bright Dots and Mosquitoes in the faster moving water. Starting to see some color change by the creek, which is a little early so start planning for fall colors in a few weeks. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
NORTH LAKE AND INTAKE II: North Lake has remained a good fishing hole this week. Rainbow Powerbait or Sierra Gold have been working well. Lots of action with grasshopper Stingers, most anglers are cutting the tails a little and hooking lots of fish. Intake 2 has also stayed pretty good. DFG stocking continues to allow lots of limits with Powerbait or nightcrawlers. Red-gold Thomas Buoyants have been responsible for several large fish. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
LAKE SABRINA: Fishing remained steady despite the low level of the lake. Trolling deeper with flashers and a worm or Thomas Buoyant produced many stringers last week. In the morning or evening, wooly buggers yielded a few stringers. Lake Sabrina is still renting fishing boats on the back natural lake, which is at 210-feet deep now.
As far as shore fishing goes, there is plenty of it now and all of it fishable. The main inlet gave up a number of limits with anglers using Sierra Gold, worms and eggs. The other inlets are running a bit slow and are shallow and muddy.
A couple of Alpers have been caught over the past couple of weeks. One weighed more than 7 pounds; the other caught buy by Jason Nielsen of Lancaster topped the scale at 5 pounds.
Department of Fish and Game stocked the lake on Aug. 24 with pan-sized trout along with some trophy size trout. We also received another stocking of Alpers this week with the bulk of the stocking weighing 8# plus each.
