Fishing has been scattered from Nehalem to the Wilson River. Haven't heard of any hot spots but fish are being taken. Starting this next week, the Tillamook Bay will start kicking in with our fall chinook. For the Wilson River, my friend, Vu took his buddies upstream, Brian and Gordie, very early this morning working a stretch of water. How the water changes from day to day noticing how fast the water has cleared from yesterday. Using a pink worm, Brian hooked this beauty and Gordie netted. What a great day spending time with your best friends fishing the majestic Wilson River and landing a chrome steelie. Way to go fellas! Good fishing to you all, Marilyn

RECORDED: [Image: sun.gif] 79 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Good
With the rain falling we could see the fishing pick back up. The No Ump cools quickly after a storm and that is exactly what these steelhead need. Fish are throughout the entire system and have been attacking the fly for those of you paying our dues. Have herd good reports the last couple of weeks. One of our guides picked up a very bright fish near the camp water this last weekend. With this weeks cool weather you should be making some time to fish here before the end of September. Try Red tiger's, Green Butt's, Purple Tiger's, Beach Bum's, Strung Out Skaters and a variety of other patterns. And always swing a waking fly through the smooth tailouts. Cover lots of water and fish with confidence. See you on the water. Fish on. Another one of our guides landed one out of two fish this Thursday. He was fishing above Mott bridge with a purple and green Beach Bum tied on a dry line with a 10" leader.

East Lake: Fishing has been fair. Best lake bet in the state right now. Callibaetis are coming off and the fish are keyed into them. Try fishing an epoxyback Callibaetis nymph behind a Peacock Careybugger with an intermediate sink line. Callibaetis CDC dun and a cripple pattern will also work.

McKenzie River: Fair for trout. Level is 2,160 cfs @ Vida. Level at Walterville 1,070 cfs. Try Brown and Olive Caddis, Baetis and a few October Caddis are showing. Swinging Soft Hackles is a good method. Rain from recent storms will cool water temps and fishing should improve. Upper river has been the best bet. Evenings still offer the best fishing.

Rogue River - Upper - September 1st, 2004
supplied by: Trophy Waters
RECORDED: [Image: sun.gif] 90 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Excellent
September 1st!! Today is the beginning of 61 days of fly-only regulations. Enjoy...................

August 31st: The river flow remains at 2,000 ish and the fish count is still 5,883 as of the 21st of August. Fishing is consistent right now for both traditional and non- traditional methods. Water temperatures are in the low fifties out of the dam. The river is full of steelhead from Shady Cove down. Fishing above Shady is okay, but there seems to be more empty cupboards up their. Less fishing traffic too!!

On the water report (Aug 29th): Floated to Tou Velle again today. Instead of taking off the river at noon, I put on the river at noon. Lots, lots, lots of fun boat traffic on 100 degree Sunday afternoons. If you have ever wanted to test a theory about whether or not a boat floating over the top of a pool effects steelhead taking your fly………….put in at noon next Sunday and you’ll be able to gather dozens of observations. Consider doing some trout fishing if you put in late and switch to steelhead fishing when the shade arrives and the splash and giggle ceremonies calm down.

Trout fishing was excellent for rainbow and cutthroat. Steelhead fishing was consistent too. And a half pounder/small adult? put a nice bend in my 6wt. The Olive Copper Bob was a steady producer.

On the water report (Aug 28th): Floated to Tou Velle before work today and landed two steelhead and a hand full of trout. Actually about 15 trout, but they were so small it was still just a handful. The first steelhead was a bright hen of the 20 inch variety on Agent Orange. She fought like a 40lb. wolverine fending off a grizzly bear. The second steelhead was the 25 inch variety and fought like a well trained dog on a leash! Nice and bright, but may have been caught a few times already. Both steelyz were on Agent Orange. Caution, full moon……………………….I lost a lens out of my Maui Jims, dropped my headlight in the river bottom, fell in over my head twice, lost my anchor, and loaded my inflatable on top of the car with the sunroof open.

Don’t be afraid of the higher flows, it brings the fish closer to the bank in many areas. It is also a great flow to go for the grab!! That’s right, get out there and swing a fly once in a while, while the flows are higher and warmer. You'll need a little courage to take a hour or two off of nymphing, and……you’ll have to deal with a skilled nymph fisher picking your pocket, BUT…..that tight line grab is the best fresh water take available. K-K-AAA-WAMMM-OOOO……………….no coffee necessary on early mornings when the steelhead are willing to wake you up.

The Nymph Fishing is very consistent right now. Be sure to fish one big and one small dropper fly to cover your bases. Some days the fish are all on the big, some days all on the small, and some days on both. Olive and Black Copper Nymph, Olive Skip Nymph, and Rubber Legg Copper Nymph have all been productive dropper flies in tandem with Agent Orange.

Good Luck on the water…….

Trout Golden Stones still represent a good food source for the trout when fished tight to banks. PMD's, BWO's and even some midges will balance out the diet. Caddis in good numbers as well. Nymphing will produce fish most of the day with mornings being very good. Look for evenings to be good on spent mayflies.

Trout
The Fall is fishing well right now with good dry fly activity available. PMD's, Caddis, Midges, as well as ant patterns will fish well on the surface. Overcast days will fish best if you are looking to fish midday. Nymphing and/or streamer fishing will work midday if it is sunny out. Streamers swung back into log jams is great fun.

Flies Midges 18-22, BWO's 18's, Flashback Pheasant Tails 16-20's, Olive or Black buggers, Miracle Midge, Disco Midge, Serendipities (olive/black), Caddis
Hot Tip Cloudy days equal good dry fly activity

RECORDED: [Image: mssunny.gif] 78 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Fair
Deschutes River
Fair
Fishing has been a little slow but they are expecting the fish to get there in a week to ten days. The water in the Columbia fro the Dalles dam to Bonneville dam is finally starting to cool with the cooling weather and that should get the fish held up at the mouth of the Deschutes moving. In a week or ten days you can expect to catch fish below Sherar’s Falls and a another week o ten days will put a number of fish above the Falls and fish can be expected up there too. Swinging traditional steelhead patterns like the Skunk’s or a Freight Train will be the most effective technique.

Flies: Skunk, 2-6, Green Butt Skunk, 2-6, Red Butt Skunk, 2-6, Freight Train, 2-6, Signal Light, 2-6, Max Canyon, 2-6, Purple Peril, 2-6, Patricia, 2-6, Spey flies in black, purple, chartreuse, and orange, 2-6, Muddler Minnow, 4-8, Silver Hilton, 2-6

Owyhee River
Good

With the weather finally starting to calm down the river is getting into a little more of a rhythm. The fish are starting to feed in the lower part of the river again. It is not back to normal quite yet but it getting better everyday. There are still hatches every afternoon and you can expect to see several bugs including Callibaetis, Baetis in gray, tan, and olive, a few PMD’s but with colder weather that will stop, some Midges, the Mahogany’s should start any day now. There are still a lot of fish to be caught on nymphs too. If you don’t see any surface action I would stick to nymphs like Pheasant Tails and Midge Larvae. The water above the slide is fairly clear and as cold as ever. The water below the slide is still a little off color but improving rapidly.

Flies: Beadhead Pheasant Tail, 16-20, Prince Nymphs, 16-20, Copper Johns, 16-18, PMD Emergers, 16-18, Callibaetis Emergers, 16-18, Baetis Hatchmatcher, 20, PMD Comparadun, 16-18, Olive Midges, 18-20, Black Midges, 18-20, Baetis Emergers, 18-20, Olive Emergers, 18-20, Parachute Callibaetis, 16-20, Mahogany Comparadun, 16-18.

Deschutes River - Lower - September 2nd, 2004
supplied by: Numb-Butt Fly Company
RECORDED: [Image: mscloudy.gif] 75 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Good
TROUT: Trout fishing remains good on the Lower Deschutes River. Nymph fishing is still the most productive way to hook feisty Redsides. Try drifting small mayfly, caddis, and midge patterns, sz. 16-22, through the deepest riffles and buckets. October Caddis are showing up in the Warm Springs to Trout Creek section. That means the fish have seen some October Caddis Pupas drifting in the current. Try using an Oct. Caddis Pupa pattern as a point fly and a smaller nymph as a dropper. I think you’ll enjoy the outcome.
Dry fly fishing remains hit and miss. Some fish just seem to always eat on the surface. If you know where they like to dine, temping them with small caddis and mayfly patterns shouldn’t be too difficult. PED hatches, and the last of the caddis hatches, have been strong in the evenings.
If the weather guy says it's going to be cloudy and drizzling tomorrow, it maybe a great day to play HOOKY. You can expect to see great mayfly hatches and fish eager to eat these tasty morsels!

STEELHEAD: Steelie Dan is on his way!!!! There are fish charging up the Deschutes as you read this. Most of the fish are being caught in the first ten miles up from the mouth. Rumor has it that guys are hammering them at Wagon Blast. We expect the fishing, from Sherers Falls to the mouth, to be awesome during the next few weeks as these fish migrate further up stream. The White river is acting up. The rain we had last week is still pushing silt into the Deschutes. Don’t let this discourage you. We fished Beaver Tail to Mac’s yesterday and I could see my boots wading in water to my waist. The river is a perfect steelie green. We experienced so so fishing. We were using big purple flies on type I sink tips. One fish was hooked, played, and lost.

The fly shop is now open in Bend. Come say HI. We're located on the corner of HWY 20 and 27th ST.
