Pump-out Station Installed at Southport Marina
#1
Boaters navigating the Missouri River in the Bismarck-Mandan area are warned that it is illegal to discharge sewage into the river, and are urged to use the newly installed pump-out station at Southport Marina near Fox Island, reports Bob Frohlich, fisheries development coordinator for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.
The boat sewage pump-out station was constructed at Southport Marina in south Bismarck due to reports that bigger boats with holding tanks were dumping raw sewage into the river. "We received word from an individual that this was happening," Frohlich said, "so we worked cooperatively to get this done."
The cost for the new pump-out station was $22,700 and $17,025 (75 percent) was paid for by game and fish, Frohlich said. "There is no charge for boaters to use the station at this time," Frohlich added, "so everyone is reminded to do their part in keeping our waterways clean."
Chief game warden Robert Timian warns boaters that it is illegal to dump waste into any water body. "You just can't discharge raw sewage into a lake or river," Timian said, "and if we see it happening, appropriate action will be taken."
