West Coast: Wya and Beyond
#1
HiYa all!
Went out to Wya Point out of Ucy yesterday after recieving some very favorable reports re: big springs. Dropped the gear (rollin chovies: yup, bait!) through a glass calm ocean at daybreak. There were numerous coho up to 12 pounds which made bait fishing an excersize in frustration, and eventually used the chovies up in fairly quick order. Went to hardware (new prototype swimmertail - pilchard knock-off) and immediately tagged the only spring for us of the day. Hard scrappin 25 lber that entertained me, as well as the folks on a nearby puker boat (yup, they're hitting there too - 3 of them yesterday)for 20 minutes or so. A bud managed to boat 2 of larger size, but those 3 were all we saw landed. Oh well, at least the 'hoes were entertaining.
For you salt-fliers out there, these coho and spring were shallow! Running gear at 30 and 40 feet. Should be able to fly a few of the 'hoes with no prob.

Wya has been hot and cold for the last week or so. Expect big numbers of giants to show soon, but they better hurry, the point closes on the 12th.

Saw a few 40's and 30's springs and a handfull of medium halibut back at the dock. All great successes came from the Big Bank yesterday.

More and more of the large are headin' home. Expect things on the west coast and Barkely sound (100,000 estimated returnees.. YAAAA!) to heat up substantially in the next little while. Looks like one of the best years in many!! The fish are really deep and chunky, and fighting as much as you can handle! Wouldn't be surprised to see a few over 50 this year!

So get out there and enjoy! I'll post an update once things really get going.

Cheers......
