EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.
FRENCHMAN LAKE: Fishing great at Snallygaster and Nightcrawler Bay with crawlers and Mepp’s lures. Some 18-inch rainbows coming in. Troll with midge wobblers or Needlefish. Fly-fishing off Big Cove with Sheep Creek or cinnamon wooly bugger. Fish in 4-12-feet of water. Midmornings have been best. Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683. The Gilly, 358-6113.
LAKE DAVIS: Water temperatures have cooled slightly. Fish remain in 6-15-feet of water. Wooly buggers in olive and rust, sizes 8 and 10 working well under a type two sinking line. Hanging bead head nymphs in size 14 and 16 right off the bottom is also good. Late mornings have been best. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com. Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251. www.dollardsmarket.com. Email — dollards@psln.com.
TRUCKEE RIVER: Still low between Tahoe City and the Boca bridge. Some baetis activity in the late morning. Nymphing the larger pools and runs with size 16 and 18 baetis nymphs has been pretty good. Flows between Boca and Reno are 300-400 c.f.s. Big crayfish patterns and stonefly nymphs have been effective. Fish the deeper holes with a lot of weight and a big indicator. Hopper action has been decent. Spinners using small Krokodile lures in silver and frog color. Also Panther Martins in black and yellow and yellow Rooster Tails. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. The Gilly, 358-6113.
LITTLE TRUCKEE: Flows remain very low at 31 c.f.s. Fish are spooky and hard to catch. Very technical presentations are the only way to catch the wary fish. 7x tippet and very small dries are the preferred method. Try parachute adam’s in size 22 and baetis dries in 20 and 22. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
CARSON RIVER: Flows are down to 34 c.f.s on the East Carson. Fish are stacked in deeper pools and very spooky. A stealthy approach is a must. The hopper dropper set up has been best as of late. Use small nymphs such as midges and baetis in size 18 and 20. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
SMITH CREEK RANCH: Fishing has picked up since the weather cooled. Adam’s dries in size 14 and 16 are working well. Wooly buggers also worth a try in black or chartreuse. Fishing should steadily improve over the next two months. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
BOCA: The water level is really low here. Near the dam is the best bet for smallmouth bass or the occasional trout. The Gilly, 358-6113.
STAMPEDE: Water is down a little, but it’s still producing better than Boca. Fish tend to migrate toward the dam and deeper portions of the lake. The Gilly, 358-6113.
SPARKS MARINA: Some bass and carp reported. Go down 20-30 feet with worms and spinners. The Gilly, 358-6113.
SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 9,000 c.f.s. Corning, Calif. Salmon fishing has finally picked up with many boats reporting limits or near limits fishing the waters from Red Bluff downstream. High winds last week made it difficult to fish, but in spite of the high winds there was still a good bite. This year has been unique in regards to the average size of fish -- seems they are either big brutes or jacks, but not much in between. There are quite a few salmon being caught from 20 to 40 pounds. While roe continues to be the best bet for most, experienced lure anglers are also scoring using a sardine-wrapped K-16 Kwikfish lure. The U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service began counting the salmon at the Red Bluff Diversion Dam on May 15, and from May 15 to date the number of salmon counted is 4,878. Last year during the same time period the count was 12,978. The quality of fish now is like early August salmon -- very fresh -- an indication that there are not fewer salmon this year, but that the run is just later than normal.
Redding to Anderson: Trout fishing remains excellent in the Redding to Anderson area. Drifters are using a small piece of roe with a Quickie. The Globug bite has slowed, but will pick up again this fall when the salmon start spawning. Excellent flows for trout fishing.
Guide services and information: Hank Mautz Professional Guide Service, (800) 355-3113. Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Kirk Portocarrero, (800) 670-4448 or (530) 221-6151. Web site: www.sacriverguide.com.
WILDHORSE: Trout have come back into action. Paul Reynolds took a 4 1/2-pound cutbow. Perch also hot using white crappie jigs. Trout coming in on blue and gold Panther Martins and Mepps. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or email: dunns@direcway.com.
ANTELOPE LAKE: Has been real good for bass. Try Gary Yamamoto baits. The Gilly, 358-6113.
EAST WALKER: Flow remain excellent at 185 c.f.s. Streamers have been effective as well as nymphs fished under an indicator. Best bet is a grasshopper. Browns are out of the main current in shallow water and will take a hopper very aggressively. Don’t overlook the shallow water up the sides of the deeper runs. Burk’s spent hopper in size 8 is a good choice as well as a madam x or a Turk’s tarantula. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
UPPER TWIN LAKES: A 9-pound, 3-ounce rainbow came in on a gold Kastmaster. Kokanee are spawning Robinson Creek, browns also moving. Nightcrawlers and Powerbait working from shore and still-fishing from boats. Mono Village Resort (760) 932-7071.
SOUTH LAKE: The lake is still full but SCE will start drawing down slowly now to prepare for winter. The fishing has continued to be good with a lot of large Rainbows coming out. Several 6-pound plus fish have come from behind the island with Powerbait or Stingers. With the cold temps we are expecting the Browns to begin coming out. Nightcrawlers and Powerbait have been best for baits. Most anglers are coming out with full stringers. Be sure to bring warm clothing. Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. the temperature was 18 degrees and the dock was standing room only with anglers ready for their boats. DFG and Alpers continue stocking. With the good fishing, parking has been difficult so be sure to arrive early. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
BISHOP CREEK: With SCE beginning to draw South Lake down the creek has and will remain a little higher than it has been throughout summer. The fishing remains good with Powerbait or nightcrawlers. Some success with salmon eggs. Trout Traps and a mealworm have been great. Two anglers reported good success with small Thomas Buoyants in the Table Mtn. campground. Weir Pond has been good with olive Matukas or Wooly Buggers. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
NORTH LAKE AND INTAKE II: There were several groups of anglers that reported good success with Lemon Twist Powerbait or Rainbow Sierra Gold. Some good action with worms. Intake 2 was busier with several float tubers and a couple of kayaks in the center and the shoreline pretty full. Reports of good fishing with Powerbait or green Matukas. Stingers and Trout Traps also doing well. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
