Oregon Fisheries Update

September 10th – September 16th, 2004

Fisheries Update: : Fall Chinook fishing on Tillamook Bay is underway! Don't go without the knowledge you need to pursue Oregon's largest strain of salmon. Get tech report #7 which details the Tillamook Bay fishery or tech report #16 which details how to catch these fish on bobbers from our secured web site. These reports and several more are available at http://www.theguidesforecast.com/techrpt.shtml.
Buoy 10 fishing effort has slowed down but estuary effort headed upstream a bit to Tongue Point on Wednesday where a smokin' hot bite motivated anglers for both Chinook and coho. Fin-clipped coho were present in good numbers but the action for hatchery coho should steady a bit even though favorable tides lie ahead for weekend anglers.

The tributary fisheries at the Kalama, Cowlitz and Sandy Rivers will be peaking this week and catch this past week indicate good success ahead. Passage at Bonneville has been impressive on some days.

Steelhead passage is also large some days motivating anglers at the mouth of the Deschutes River.

Estuary crabbing will likely pick up again as salmon effort drops off mostly due to the Chinook closure and the lack of hatchery coho available at the mouth of the Columbia.

A few chinook have been taken from Nestucca tidewater. Siletz and Alsea Rivers are slow.

Salmon fishing out of Winchester Bay has been up one day, down the next. Umpqua Steelhead fishing has been improving. Smallmouth bass fishing is good but winding down as water temps fall.

Rogue Bay and River offers good chinook fishing. Half-pounders are being caught and summer steelhead fly fishing is good in the upper river.

Clackamas River steelheaders are catching steelhead on spinners. The Sandy River steelheading is poor. Coho have started to enter.
The North Santiam is high due to water release from Bog cliff Dam and will stay that way 'til Fall rains push it even higher. Fishing is slow.

The ODFW has stocked the following waters in the Willamette Zone this week: Estacada Lake, Faraday Lake, North Fork Reservoir, and Small Fry Lake. Three Creeks was stocked in the Deschutes watershed.

Pictured here is Alan hoisting one of the largest coho of the season taken aboard Bob's boat using the Lamiglas Kenai King rods with Delta Diver and fresh herring.

Soapbox Update

The Oregon Boat rally went off well on Wednesday September 8. Although participation was adequate, it wasn't the response we are capable of to show the Federal Government the power of the sportfishing industry. Of course, it was during a workday and in the middle of some of the most productive fishing of the year. But there is still an opportunity to participate and you don't even have to leave your home to do it!

EVEN IF YOU ATTENDED THE BOAT RALLY, WE NEED YOUR HELP IN A LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN!
