PIERRE, S.D. - See pumpkins fly at Newton Hills State Park near Canton on Saturday, Oct. 2. Pumpkin catapulting is one of many demonstrations and activities featured at Newton Hills' 5th annual FestiFALL. Family activities featuring pumpkins, crafts and bluegrass music run from 1 to 5 p.m.
During the Saturday afternoon FestiFALL festivities, autumn's harvest crop, the pumpkin, will take the spotlight with a decorated pumpkin contest and demonstrations on pumpkin carving, catapulting and more. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own decorated or carved pumpkins for judging. Kids will "make and take" a variety of crafts, and the bluegrass group Coffey and Company will entertain visitors in the afternoon.
Following the afternoon FestiFALL celebration, a 19th-century historical candlelight walk will lead visitors along 2.1 miles of trail through the deep woods of Newton Hills. Hikers will encounter many surprises along the trail, including musicians and 19th-century characters. Walkers can begin the self-led adventure anytime between 7:15 p.m. and 9 p.m.
During the evening candlelight walk, participants can learn more about the night sky with the Sioux Falls Astronomy Club. The club will also set-up telescopes so visitors can view the stars and planets.
