[#990033]FISHING HEATING UP AS TEMPERATURES COOL IN WHITE PINE COUNTY[/#990033]
With air and water temperatures cooling, anglers will now find the best fishing of the year at reservoirs in White Pine County, according to Chris Crookshanks, fisheries biologist for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
Crookshanks said that the dog days of summer are definitely over at Comins Reservoir, and the fishing for rainbow trout has made a dramatic improvement in the past couple of weeks. The recent catch has even included a fair number of fish that weigh 4 to 5 pounds.
“From late fall until the lake freezes over is the best time for fishing because the fish are feeding as they try to put on weight in preparation for winter,” said Crookshanks. “This year the cool weather has arrived a little early and it has hastened up things.”
Anglers are now using a variety of baits to catch fish at the lake, which is located approximately 7 miles south of Ely along U.S. 93. Live worms and PowerBait are the most common offerings while those who prefer flies have been having success with small nymphs.
Cave Lake, located southeast of Ely, has been producing excellent catch rates for rainbow trout. And now is a nice time to visit the area because the fall scenery is spectacular with the aspen trees displaying their fall colors.
Illipah Reservoir west of Ely along U.S. 50, has great trout fishing as well, even though the reservoir is low. Besides recently stocked rainbow trout, anglers are catching carryover fish that weigh up to 2 pounds.

Crookshanks cautions anglers, campers and hikers to beware of cold temperatures because they can quickly cause hypothermia for anyone who is not prepared for the weather.
Fishing locations and information about fishing in Nevada can be obtained at all NDOW offices and online at www.ndow.org. NDOW offices are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
