Enjoy A "Little Hike On The Prairie" At Lake Thompson Recreation Area

[size 2]PIERRE, S.D. – Immerse yourself in prairie grasses and flowers on the "Little Hike on the Prairie" Walk in the Park, held Oct. 9 at Lake Thompson Recreation Area near Lake Preston.[/size]
[size 2]The guided nature walk will take visitors through the native prairie that surrounds the park. Along the way, visitors will identify the various plants, discover their different uses and learn the role each plays in the prairie ecosystem. Participants will also hear the history of Lake Thompson, which Laura Ingalls Wilder referred to as Twin Lakes in several of her books about growing up in the area.[/size]
[size 2]The walk will begin at the swim beach parking lot at 5 p.m. and take approximately one hour. Participants should dress for the weather and wear good hiking shoes and insect repellent.[/size]
[size 2]There is no cost to participate, although a park entrance license is required. For more information, call the park office at (605) 847-4893. Lake Thompson Recreation Area is located six miles southwest of Lake Preston off US Hwy. 14.[/size]
[size 2]The Walk in the Park program is a series of educational, guided hikes held throughout the year in South Dakota state parks, recreation areas and nature preserves. Game, Fish and Parks staff and volunteers lead the programs, which are co-sponsored by the S.D. Department of Health.[/size]
