Working with bunny fur
#1
[cool][blue][size 2]I have posted a couple of past threads on making bunny fur flies and jigs. There have been requests for more info on working with this material. Here are a few thoughts.[/size][/blue]

[blue][size 2]1. When cutting the strips from the bunny fur, lay it fur side down, on a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet (to catch all the wild hairs (hares). That stuff explodes.
2. Cut lengthwise, with a razor blade or sharp craft knife, just deep enough to cut through the skin and not to cut the hairs.
3. Half inch wide strips work fine. The old style was an inch wide, and glued at the edges. Single unglued strips work better in the water.
4. Measure the strip against the jig hook, so that the end comes up to the bottom of the barb. Leave the end trailing two to six inches behind the hook.
5. Run the hook up through the skin first and out through the hair, so that the hair rides up when being fished.
6. If you are going to add flashabou, krystalflash or contrasting color feather or fur, wrap it on the hook first, before hooking and wrapping the fur.
7. You can finish th head with a hackle feather, or with a thin strip of bunny fur tied in and wrapped like hackle.

Hope this helps.
