Bass Limit Change Proposed For Five Northeast Lakes
#1
PIERRE, S.D. - Daily black[#0000ff] [/#0000ff]bass limits might change to three daily for South Dakota lakes Enemy Swim (including Campbell Slough), Roy, Cochrane, Clear (Marshall County) and Pickerel under a recent Game, Fish and Parks proposal.
The proposal would allow anglers to take a three-fish, daily combination limit of smallmouth and largemouth bass, one of which could be 18 inches or greater. Also included would be a protected slot size restriction of 12-18 inches. Current rules at Enemy Swim, Roy, Clear and Pickerel lakes allow for[#0000ff] [/#0000ff]one bass daily, and the fish must be greater than 18 inches in length.[#0000ff] [/#0000ff]At Lake Cochrane, a 15-inch minimum length limit and five-fish daily limit are currently in place for bass.
"This rule change would allow the harvest of bass less than 12 inches in length and increase the daily limit from one to three," said GFP Fisheries Biologist Brian Blackwell of Webster. "The rule would also keep the maximum size restriction of only one fish 18 inches or longer. Thus, an angler could choose to take two fish less then 12 inches and one 18 inches or longer in a daily limit." He noted that the long-term expectation for these fisheries is to provide improved size structure[#0000ff] [/#0000ff]in the fish population while allowing a more reasonable harvest. Blackwell added that anglers using these lakes have requested the ability to harvest more bass.
To comment on the proposals, people can attend the public hearing at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Ramkota in Pierre, or write Game, Fish and Parks, 523 E. Capitol, Pierre, S.D. 57501.
