GFP Proposal To Open and Close Some Lakes For Taking Bait
#1
PIERRE, S.D. – Opening and closing a number of South Dakota lakes for the legal taking of bait constitute a recent proposal by the Game, Fish and Parks Commission.
All South Dakota waters are open for the taking of bait unless specifically listed as closed, according to Game, Fish and Parks Fisheries Administrator Dennis Unkenholz.
"Many South Dakota waters are very conducive for producing bait, predominantly minnows," he said. "We generally recommend lakes be open for the taking of bait where bait harvest will not negatively impact established sport fisheries."
Unkenholz noted that the current list of lakes closed to the taking of bait has not changed for many years, and after fisheries staff reviewed lakes in their regions, they have determined that the list should be modified.
Lakes that would be opened for taking bait include: [ul] [li]Lake Byron, Beadle County, [li]East and West Oakwood lakes, Brookings County, [li]Whitewood and Spirit lakes, Kingsbury County, [li]Beaver Lake, Minnehaha County. [/li][/ul]
Lakes that would be closed to the taking of bait include: [ul] [li]Wilmarth Lake, Aurora County, [li]Lake Henry, Bon Homme County, [li]Lakes Ethan and Hanson, Hanson County, [li]Lakes Dimock and Menno, Hutchinson County, [li]Lake Iroquois, Kingsbury County, [li]Mud Lake, Lawrence County. [/li][/ul]
To comment on the proposals, people can attend the public hearing at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Ramkota in Pierre, or write Game, Fish and Parks, 523 E. Capitol, Pierre, S.D. 57501.
