Oct. 29-30 Salmon River
#1
The upper Salmon River has been one of only several choices for us driftboat guides. The low water-335 cfs has made for bumpy rides and tuff fishing conditions. Plenty of moldy salmon digging gravel still with only a few fresher ones trickling in. However steelies have been coming up steadily for several weeks now. We have had fair luck with them- boating 2-3 per trip with a few more on and off(LDR). Crowds are light so plenty of room to fish move & fish move until we tangle with some chrome, then hang tight and work on them. Fresh tied trout skien and single egg pattern flies, mostly in pink have been doing the trick. I did do a couple of "surf" fishing trips at the river mouth with about the same results. The smaller tribs are still way low around here(eastern Lake Ontario), the rain may have to fall for 40 days and nights to increase flows-LOL Still with the water low the salmon are moving in (lower ends) to do there thing -water or not they need to spawn. Very few trout in the tribs to the north, however Oswego has been getting some steelies, bows, and browns- nothing spectacular but OK. Oh yea and alot of salmon are over there as well. Some rain is in the forecast, it seems the weather patterns are changing. If it holds true, then tribs all around the Lake should be in for fantastic fishing.
