EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.

FRENCHMAN LAKE: Fishing should remain good until ice forms. Russ and Mike Rizzo of Reno caught limits over the weekend at Big Cove. The total weight was 14 pounds. They were using nightcrawlers with anise oil. Fish are eating snail and scud patterns. Wooly buggers and leeches are also worth a try. Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. LAKE DAVIS: On Tuesday, the water surface temperature was 43-45 degrees. Fishing has slowed and has been downgraded from good to a rating of slow to fair. Most anglers are landing one to two fish per outing. Graeagle's Buzz Miller landed a limit from shore on Friday, with the biggest fish 23 inches and 5.225 pounds. On Tuesday, 3-year old Robert Griffin and his dad and friends landed 11 rainbows while still-fishing from their boat, Robert caught the big fish, which weighed 4.9 pounds. Access remains OK, but can change with any future storm.
For fly-fishermen, fish are eating blood midges under an indicator or stripped slowly with an intermediate line. Wooly buggers and leeches in olive and brown are also working. They are best fished with a type two uniform sink line. Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251. www.dollardsmarket.com. Email — dollards@psln.com. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. TRUCKEE RIVER: Flows are about 100-150 c.f.s. through Reno. Water temperature is in the mid-40s and fishing has been pretty good. Brown trout are active and are in pre-spawn mode. Nymphing with October caddis pupa with a baetis nymph dropper has been working well. Try streamers in deeper holes. The browns get territorial this time of year and can be caught on minnow imitations. California stream season closes Nov. 15. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. LITTLE TRUCKEE: Flows are at 65 c.f.s. Fishing has been good. There has been a Gray Drake hatch most days and a Blue-Winged Olive May Fly hatch. The drake’s are about a size 14 and the BWO’s are 18 or 20. Fish are eating on the surface as well as taking nymphs fished under an indicator. California stream season closes Nov. 15. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing has been really good. Trollers using downriggers are going as deep as 60 feet, using Flatfish, Sting King spoons, Apex spoons and assorted hologram Tor-P-Do spoons. Bank fishing is good in deeper waters with hologram spoons and Tor-P-Do spoons. Fly-fishing is starting to get better. Wooly worms and wooly buggers are working. Darker colors, olive, black and purple. The north end has had the best reports. Not a lot of big fish, but good numbers. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. EAST CARSON RIVER: Flows are fluctuating due to rain and snow melt. Flows were 108 c.f.s as of Tuesday morning. Fishing has been decent with nymphing in the deeper pools the most popular method. Baetis nymphs and October caddis are the predominant bug in the system now. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 5,000 c.f.s. Catching nice King Salmon, 10-18 pounds average, with the occasional 30-40-pound salmon. Using Flatfish T-50s and T-55s, and bouncing roe, both producing great kings. Also, K-16 Kwikfish in pink and white or plain silver. Watch for December to produce monster kings, even larger and brighter salmon on the way. King salmon season will remain open until Jan. 14.
Redding to Anderson. Fly-fishing for rainbow trout is good. Picking up a few steelhead also. Try micro May Fly egg patterns and glo-bugs.

WILDHORSE: Weather is moderate and fishing is good. Some nice browns up to 6 pounds have shown up. There is a little skim ice around the shore line. Cast over the ice. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or email: dunns@direcway.com.

EAGLE LAKE: Fishing is starting get really good here. The water temperature is just about right. Rust-colored leeches fished with either an intermediate or type two sinking line is usually the best method this time of year. Fish are holding in 4-12 feet of water around the tules. The Spaulding area has been good. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

CROWLEY LAKE: Pretty tough lately, but should improve with nicer weather. The fish are cruising along the ledges and steeper drop-offs. Try a Doc's Twin Lake Special in black or a red/black midge pupa under an indicator. www.performanceguideservice.com.

UPPER OWENS RIVER: Water flow is 105 c.f.s. Still waiting for a migration of fish from the lake. Pretty good fishing for holdover stocked fish with western coachmen, pheasant tails and hares ears. Special regulations in effect below the monument. The section from the monument to the Benton Crossing Bridge is closed to all fishing. River above the bridge is restricted to barbless artificials. www.performanceguideservice.com

LOWER OWENS: Water flow is 154 c.f.s. Fishing has been good with a variety of nymphs such as hare’s ears, pheasant tails and copper johns. Also, some good dry fly-fishing in the middle of the day with baetis duns and Adams. www.performanceguideservice.com

HOT CREEK: Water flow is at 7 cf.s. Fishing is very challenging. Midge emergers and tiny (size 22-24) Adams in the mornings and cdc caddis in the afternoon. Some mid-day baetis action on the surface. www.performanceguideservice.com.

EAST WALKER: Flows are down to the minimum 21 c.f.s. Fishing is slow due to the low water and the fish need a break when the water gets this low. Wait until the flows come up to at least 50 c.f.s. to fish here. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.
