DEP Environmental Conservation Police Make an Arrest for Jacklighting for Deer The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Environmental Conservation Police (EnCon) arrested Mr. Michael L. Henson (age 44 of Salem, CT) at approximately 11:00 pm on Saturday, November 13, for ongoing jacklighting activity and related wildlife charges in the town of Lyme. Saturday evening, DEP Environmental Conservation Police Officer Scott Arsenault and Sgt. Robert Zabilanski observed a pick-up truck spot a light field from the road and shoot from the vehicle. The EnCon police officers stopped and inspected the vehicle. Following the inspection, the driver, Mr. Henson, was arrested for possession of a loaded weapon in a motor vehicle, shooting from a public road, jacklighting for deer and hunting from a motor vehicle. A subsequent investigation by EnCon officers at the accused residence resulted in an additional five counts of illegal possession of deer. The accused has been given a court date in Norwich for the illegal possession of deer and he will be presented in New London for jacklighting and related charges. Jacklighting occurs at night when an artificial light (usually a handheld spotlight or vehicle headlights) illuminate an area where deer are known to frequent. The light is shined into the deer’s eyes, causing the deer to stand still, making it an easy target. The deer is then shot. Jacklighting is a serious offense since hunters using this method to kill deer are often unaware of the area and surroundings in which they are shooting. Deer hunting is legal in Connecticut from ½ hour before sunrise until sunset, Monday through Saturday. Hunting is not allowed on Sundays. I'm really glad they caught those guys. Take there truck, guns and even their house.. It all adds up to at least 6 deer they illegally harvested. It sounds like the deer aren't hard to shoot either. No fair chase was involved.
