UDOT to start new round of construction

The Daily Herald

The Utah Department of Transportation is about to begin the next phase of construction on U.S. Highway 189 in Provo Canyon.
While major construction won't begin until March 2005, the contractor, Ames Construction, Inc., will begin preliminary work near the Deer Creek Dam starting Thursday.
Motorists should expect short, periodic road closures to allow trucks to cross the highway. Delays should be minimal.
After this work is completed, crews won't work again until March.
After completion, the improvements will provide a safer, more environmentally friendly and more efficient roadway for the thousands of motorists who travel through Provo Canyon every day, according to UDOT. The most significant improvement motorists will see is an expansion of the road from two lanes to a four-lane, divided highway between State Road 92, Sundance turnoff and a half-mile east of Deer Creek Dam. Other notable improvements include:
A safer crossing at the Deer Creek Dam after crews realign the road across the spillway, eliminating the sharp turn at the dam.
A more geologically stable location, as the road is moved farther away from the Provo River.
A safer road, with westbound and eastbound lanes divided and westbound lanes 30 feet above eastbound lanes.
The project, which is funded through the Centennial Highway Fund, will cost $55 million.
This is the third of four phases of construction on U.S. 189 and should be completed by the end of 2006.
