Anglers who were fishing at the White Pine County lake over the weekend told NDOW that the fishing was somewhat slow, but the fish that were taken were around 19 to 20 inches. Fish are being caught in deep water near the dam and in the channel between the upper and lower lakes. Sparkle PowerBait, worms and marshmallows are catching the fish while the favorite fly has been the flashback hare’s ear nymph.
Colder weather has started forming ice around the edges of the reservoir but it has not deterred anglers from trying their luck. After breaking the ice around the dock, anglers caught a few rainbow trout that averaged 11 inches. The stockers were taken with PowerBait.
Pete Gill from Nevada State Parks expects access to fishing to become more limited until the ice forms and it becomes solid enough for ice fishing.
Ben Johnson from Nevada State Parks said that more anglers fished than the previous week and were rewarded with a few stocker size rainbow trout. The fish were taken with worms and PowerBait.
Ice has started forming around the edges of the reservoir.
Shore fishing has finally shown some signs of life as anglers have been enjoying some success for striped bass at Horsepower Cove while boaters are still catching stripers at the mouth of Las Vegas Wash, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
A large number of shad were seen at Horsepower Cove this week and anglers are netting the small fish for use as bait. On Monday (11/29/04) shore anglers were having fair success for stripers with most weighing around 1½ pounds.
Boaters have been doing well for stripers off Special Events Beach by drifting anchovies and casting Sassy Shad lures. The beach is open to shore fishing daily from dawn to dusk.
A pair of boaters told NDOW creel census clerks that they caught stripers that weighed from 4 to 5 pounds while down rigging late last week at 35 to 40 feet from Stewart’s Point to Callville Bay.
“With the water temperature below 70 degrees, now is a good time to look for big stripers in shallow water,” said Jon Sjoberg, NDOW supervising fisheries biologist. “Fish in the back of coves early in the morning and look for signs of trout popping.”
Sjoberg also said that anglers who are willing to work could be rewarded for their efforts with both stocked rainbow trout and stripers.
The next trout plants will take place on Friday (12/3/04) at Hemenway, Horsepower, Pumphouse and North Saddle coves.
[#990033]LAKE MOHAVE[/#990033]
Windy weather kept anglers away from the lake over the weekend and NDOW creel clerks saw very few fish at the cleaning stations. There was a report of a 28-pound striped bass being caught the day after Thanksgiving near Cottonwood Cove with an AC Plug.
A return of more stable weather should again produce fair action for stripers that weigh around a pound in the narrows above Cottonwood Cove.
NDOW will stock rainbow trout Friday (12/3/04) at Placer Cove, Cottonwood Cove and Willow Beach.
Sporadic rains throughout the week did not dampen anglers’ enthusiasm. Anglers fishing Cold Springs reservoir experienced good success for rainbow trout that ranged from 13 to 16 inches. No anglers were noted fishing Haymeadow Reservoir.
High temperatures averaged in the mid 40s and the nighttime temperatures were in the low 20s. All reservoirs are currently ice-free.
Fishing was good over the Thanksgiving holiday due to last week’s rainbow trout plants. The next plant will take place on Friday, Dec. 10 at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.
