EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.

FRENCHMAN LAKE: The fishing is pretty good, but access is limited. The dam area has been fishing well and you can still get in there. Sheep Creek specials and crystal snails are working well. Use a type two uniform sink line and fish the edges in 4-12-feet of water. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683.

LAKE DAVIS: As of mid-afternoon Tuesday, the lake was 95 percent iced over. The only open water is at the north tip of Mallard Cove. Access requires 4-wheel drive. Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251.

TRUCKEE RIVER: The river has begun to form ice along the banks and is hard to fish now. Water temperature is in the mid 30s and flows are low. Wait a couple weeks for some warmer weather and for the ice to clear. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing from boats has been good. Guys are going down about 30 feet and trolling Flatfish and Apexes. Watermelon has been the best color. Chub color and frog seem to be the U-20 colors of choice. Try wiggle worts in crawdad patterns. Shore fishermen doing well in deeper areas like Spider Point and Warrior Point where there are good drop-offs. Casting spoons.
Fly-fishing remained pretty good with the fish spread out all over the lake. The Martini olive fly continues to be hot. Other patterns to try include the Northern lights tadpole and the purple cowboy. There is still some grass in the shallows so either fish deeper drop-offs or do not let your flies sink all the way to the bottom if you are in a grassy area. Check your flies between casts to remove any grass you might have picked up.
Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

SPARKS MARINA: Fishing should be good here now. Nightcrawlers probably the best bet at this time of year. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

WILDHORSE: The lake was completely frozen on Sunday. After a few more nights of sub-zero temperatures, it should be good for ice fishing. It was 15-below zero on Sunday night. Chukar hunting is still good on the Owyhee desert. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or email: dunns@direcway.com.

EAGLE LAKE: The fishing is starting to get really good. The Spaulding area is starting to turn on and the bigger fish are starting to show up. Rust-colored leeches fished with a floating line or an intermediate line right up against the rock piles and the tule’s from either a boat or a float tube has been effective. Dress warm. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

LOWER OWENS: Water flow is 106 c.f.s. Fishing has been good with a variety of nymphs such as hare’s ears, pheasant tails and copper johns. Also, some good dry fly-fishing in the middle of the day with baetis duns and Adams. Water temperatures have been in the high 40s.
