Last DEP report till spring
#1
Weekly Fishing Report - Week of November 29, 2004
[#ff0000]This is the last Weekly Report for 2004. We will have special reports on the Atlantic salmon broodstock fishery in the Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers and ice fishing conditions as these activities continue throughout the colder months. We will resume publishing the Weekly Fishing Report in the spring just prior to Opening Day in April. Please continue to visit the Fisheries Division Home Page for updates on all fisheries issues. [/#ff0000][#ff0000]ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS![/#ff0000] [Image: salmon.gif][#004080]INLAND REPORT[/#004080]
This week, DEP will be stocking the last of this year’s salmon from our Kensington Hatchery. About 150 salmon will be split between the Naugatuck and Shetucket rivers, bringing the total number of broodstock salmon released into the two rivers to 1,460 fish. Next week, DEP expects (weather permitting) to stock an additional 400 salmon from the federal hatchery in Vermont.
BROODSTOCK ATLANTIC SALMON fishing is excellent in the Naugatuck and Shetucket rivers. Many fish up to 28” have been caught-and- released. Successful fly fishermen are using white/yellow wooly bugger or attractor streamers. Spin fisherman are using a variety of lures including gold/black floating Rapalas. Lures must have only one free swinging hook (treble hooks are not allowed- please refer to the current Anglers Guide for the definition of a hook). One salmon per day may be harvested from Dec.1, 2004 through March 31, 2005. Remember that there is a 26-lb salmon (and a 23-lb fish) out there waiting to thrill anglers.
Anglers are also reminded that DEP conducted experimental stockings of 110 pre-spawn Atlantic salmon into the Farmington River (Burlington-Avon-Farmington), Salmon, Blackledge, Jeremy and Eightmile Rivers in mid-October. [#ff0000]These stockings are not part of the annual broodstock salmon stocking program and it is illegal to harvest Atlantic salmon in these waters.[/#ff0000] Anglers should take care not to mistake these fish for large brown trout.
TROUT -Hearty anglers have been enjoying some excellent late fall fishing in a number of rivers and streams including the Farmington, Norwalk, Mill, Naugatuck, Pootatuck and Pomperaug rivers. Streamers (9a.m. – 1p.m. during low light periods/overcast days) and nymphing (late afternoon) are working well. For streamers try white, yellow & brown colors. Patterns to try include: White Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn, Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10). Bottom bouncing nymphs with Tan and Winter Caddis pupa (#16-18) & Pheasant Tail (#12-20) is recommended. The Farmington River is currently 43°F with moderately high turbid flows (about 800 cfs below the Still River). Until flows from the Still River decrease, the most fishable flows (230 cfs) can be found above Riverton. BWO continue to be the dominant hatch, with Caddis mixed in. For best action try Blue Wing Olives (#16-20, late morning), Caddis (winter & tan #16-18, early afternoon). Expect most of the action during mid-day (11:30 am – 3:00 pm). The Housatonic River is currently 41°F with difficult to fish flows (about 2800 cfs at Falls Village). Insect hatches include: Blue Wing Olive (#18-22, early morning) and Winter caddis (#16-20, early morning & late afternoon).
THE OPEN WATER SEASON is winding down for many anglers (and fish). LARGEMOUTH BASS fishing is reported slow. Areas to try include Lake Zoar, Rogers Lake and the Congamond Lakes. Some WALLEYE action in Saugatuck Reservoir (24-25”).
NOTES: Lake Saltonstall is closed for the season and Saugatuck Reservoir will close December 31. Winter drawdowns of Gardner Lake, Glasgo Pond, Pachaug Pond and Lower and Middle Bolton lakes are in progress. All are scheduled for eventual drawdowns of 3 feet, but levels will vary depending on recent precipitation. A 7-8 foot winter drawdown of Candlewood Lake began on November 1. Current drawdown rate is approximately half a foot per week.

A REMINDER: Be seen. Fall hunting season is underway! DEP recommends wearing brightly colored clothing (i.e. [#ff6600]fluorescence orange[/#ff6600]) at all times while in the field. [#004080]MARINE REPORT[/#004080]
