Tomcod and Smelt , only in the history books?
#1
[font "Verdana,Arial,Helvetica"][size 1][font "Verdana,Arial,Helvetica"][size 1]Heather Fried a uconn graduate student and Steven Brown an undergradate student are pulling a 110' net in CT. rivers and coming up empty for Tomcod and Smelt. Smelt are on the threatened species list for CT. Several reasons seem to be a cause for not finding any. Degradation of spawning areas, dam construction, stripe bass predation, and even global warming. These fish need cold waters and we have been getting warmer winters, especially in the 90's. In 1922 hatcheries tried to resupply but have long since stopped. Only time will tell if we see these fish again

another disturbing story. this seems to be happening everywhere with some sort of species. i just spent a week in new hampshire and liked the area alot. wish i had time to fish over there since there is so much water to be fished.

hi i see your all worried about the smelts ect im not sure what it is like where your at ect.But in newfoundland Canada they still make the spawn there geesh i mean trillions on the shores after they are done ect.Its so awsome to them riseing on the water when they are getting chased on a calm day. its like its raing in one area.I think i would be more worried about the seal populations where im from and the resistance from green peace to open the limits on hunting them. But thats another topic.
