Oregon Fishing Update

Oregon Fisheries Update

December 3rd – December 9th, 2004

The Columbia River has slowed for sturgeon. Bank anglers continue to produce some decent catches but the cooler temperatures of late fall are clearly affecting the bite. The Kelly Point Park/lower Willamette River are also not underway as of yet.

John Day steelhead fishing is slow as well. There may be some passage problems at the John Day facility that are keeping fish from migrating.

Anglers on the Cowlitz River are catching winter steelhead.

Crabbing is as good as it gets and a late start for commercial crabbers will aid in the sportsmen's take.

Tillamook area streams produced well on the last rain freshet but that seems like a long time ago now. Anglers anxiously await another rain or better tides to stimulate the late Chinook fishery or the first good burst of steelhead.

Tillamook Bay may produce a few sturgeon along with some decent crabbing this week. The weaker tide series will work to the angler's benefit this week.

The Alsea River is also awaiting a good rain to trigger the steelhead migration. It is just one freshet away from great fishing! As a matter of fact, all of the South coast rivers would benefit form rainfall. The Elk and Sixes will likely get another flush of chinook with some precipitation and rain would serve to warm the chilly water of the Rogue River and jump-start the winter steelhead run.

Mild tides over the weekend favor crabbing. Good catches are expected out of Newport and Waldport.

Little steelhead action was seen inland over the holiday weekend with the Clackamas disappointing most hopefuls and the Sandy run still weeks away. The few winter metalheads that have been taken at Meldrum Bar reflects the low numbers of fish in the Willamette. The dismal counts at the Falls confirm it.

North Santiam steelheaders can look forward only to catch-and release action starting early next year when the all-native winter run finally arrives.

No trout stocking took place this week. E.E. Wilson Pond is closed.
