Schroon Lake NY ice fishing
#1
This productive, 4,000-acre lake often takes a back seat to nearby Lake Champlain, but it shouldn't. Schroon offers excellent lake trout and landlocked salmmon fishing, and some slammer perch when you can locate them. Throw in pike, pickerel and panfish, and it's everything an ice angler could want.
You usually walk onto schroon by mid- December in an area known as the narrows, and the first ice often yields some great fishing for lakers and landlocks. Setting tip-ups rigged with smelt is popular; sometimes just a few feet under the ice catches cruising fish in 60,80 and even 100 feet of water.
As the season progresses usually just before or after jan. 1 the schroon lake town beach area is a hot access point, as well as Fowler Ave. just across from the school.Again tip-ups seem to be the most jpopular method for 3-to-5 pound lakers and landlocks that generally run 15 to 20 inches. Schoon can be best accessed off the Adirondack Northway(I87) between jpottersville and schroon lake village.
