Oregon Fishing Update

Oregon Fisheries Update

December 24th – December 30th, 2004

TGF offers a Holiday Fishing Outlook this week. Much of the success anglers may expect this weekend will be contingent on the amount of precipitation resultant from the front passing over during that period of time. Otherwise, "low and clear" would be an apt description for most all Oregon rivers.

The Wilson River will kick out some steelhead regardless and possible a late-season chinook. It's been slow on the Nestucca.

Sturgeon fishing has been slow on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers with no hot spots emerging for the holiday weekend.

Commercial crabbing on the lower Columbia will not commence 'til January 15, 2005. Recreational crabbing out of Hammond is good and improving.

The skinny waters of the Alsea have kicked out a few jumbo winter steelhead. Most other South coast rivers will only fish well with some rain. Summer steelhead are available in the upper Rogue, winters on the lower river.

The Clackamas is the best bet for a winter steelhead in the metro area. A few are available in the Sandy but this river will start to shine in late January.

Tahkenitch Lake will likely remain open through the end of the year for the wild coho fishery with the quota not yet half-filled.

Large trout have been stocked in Walter Wirth Lake as well as Walling, Huddleston, and Junction City Ponds.

Many regulations will change in 2005, the most significant involve popular fisheries such as sturgeon, coho and bass. The new booklet is available now and getting informed ahead of time might be a good idea.

Have a safe and happy Christmas.

Soapbox Update:

* * * HOW MUCH MORE ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE UP? * * *

I don't generally draw negative attention to our beloved Department's of Fish and Wildlife but this proposal is really frying me! Why would our Departments (both Oregon and Washington) allow a three-fold increase in steelhead mortality, putting fragile wild stocks at risk, for the harvest of a few thousand more hatchery Chinook? If there was ever a time for sportanglers to unite………..THE TIME IS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! READ ON: http://www.theguidesforecast.com/
