EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.

FRENCHMAN LAKE: Ice is forming again, but there is a lot of open water off Lunker Point and other areas. There’s no snow on the roads, you can drive around the lake. The Janssen family of Reno caught 11 rainbows with a total weight of 15 pounds fishing off Crystal Point on Monday. They were using nightcrawlers. Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683.

LAKE DAVIS: Approximately 70 percent of the surface area of the lake is iced over. There is open water on the east shore from Coot Bay north past Mallard Cove. Access to both Coot and Mallard Cove is available via a two-track path that requires 4-wheel drive. The Nelson brothers fished the Mallard cove area on Saturday with Mark landing a 5.5-pound lunker and John landing a 4.8-pounder. Powerbait and/or inflated nightcrawlers have been the baits of choice.
The 2005 fishing licenses are out and make for great stocking stuffers. California 2004 fishing licenses expire Dec. 31.

TRUCKEE RIVER: The flows are perfect. They have been about 200 c.f.s. for a couple weeks. The ice is all but gone and the fish are active. Small bead head nymphs such as HBIs in size 16 to 20 fished under an indicator are productive. The middle of the day is going to be the best time due to the colder weather. For spinners, try black and yellow Panther Martins. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. The Gilly, 358-6113.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fly-fishing remains good. Reports last week ranged from one or two fish to 15 or 20. Anglers doing the best are moving around and finding fish. There was a report of 10 fish caught at Monument on Thursday and 18 at Lone Tree. Anglers not doing so well are the ones who cannot stay away from the Nets area. This is a great time of year to explore new beaches and catch fish in a new spot. Dark-colored wooly buggers continue to be working well. Shore anglers throwing rainbow and watermelon spoons. Boaters doing well trolling U-20 Flatfish in rainbow and brown. Also, Lyman frog pattern lures. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. The Gilly, 358-6113.

SPARKS MARINA: Fishing should be decent here. Nightcrawlers probably the best bet at this time of year. Some bass and carp reported. Go down 20-30 feet with worms and spinners. The Gilly, 358-6113. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

PACIFIC OCEAN: The dungeness crab and sand dab combination trips continue to produce excellent results. Over the weekend, out of Emeryville, the New Seeker reported in with limits of dungeness crabs (six per person), also adding 2,796 sand dabs for the 48 anglers aboard over two days. Best action has been about 15 to 20 miles straight out the Golden Gate. The combo trips will be running through Jan. 2. For information or reservations call (510) 654-6040.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 4,000 c.f.s. Anderson, Calif. Low, clear water is creating only a fair salmon bite. There are a lot of shallows and obstacles for boaters to be aware of. Guides and anglers who are out there every day are hooking into some big, bright salmon up to 50 pounds. K-16 sardine wrapped Kwikfish lures are working best and you have to get out there early this time of year. The first light of day is best. Barge Hole in the Anderson Balls Ferry area has been the best spot to fish.
King salmon season will remain open until Jan. 14.
Red Bluff to Redding. Trout fishing is still good using Globugs or roe with a Quickie.
Guide services and information: Hank Mautz Professional Guide Service, (800) 355-3113. Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Kirk Portocarrero, (800) 670-4448 or (530) 221-6151.

WALKER LAKE: Fishing is as good as it has ever been. Boaters are reporting 30-40 fish per day. Trolling Tor-P-Dos, Flatfish and Apex. Best spot is Salo beach on the east side. Shore fishing is also very good using Powerbait and casting Tor-P-Dos. Shore fishermen reporting 10-15 fish per day in the 2-4-pound range. Ed Jones, Bait and Tackle Shop, (w) 945-2525. (h) 945-2513.

EAGLE LAKE: Still some open water at the south end of the lake. Fish can be caught in 4-8-feet of water using floating lines or intermediate lines with rust-colored leeches or wooly’s. Dress warm. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
