The Ice Team's first Trap Attack ice fishing tournament of 2005 is set for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 9 on Devils Lake. Woodland Resort will serve as headquarters for the Devils Lake event.
The Ice Team is a group of ice fishing promoters headed by pioneer winter angler Dave Genz.
Perch prognosticators are expecting an "interesting" tournament because the perch bite, to date, has been tough, according to Kyle Blanchfield of Woodland Resort. Tournament boundaries for this year's Trap Attack, on Creel Bay, are likely to shift from past years because a long pressure ridge that will cut off access between the takeoff point and the bay's north end.
The Devils Lake Trap Attack features a $25,000 purse, and the top 15 teams will qualify for the North American Ice Fishing Championship, set for December 2005 in Alexandria, Minn. Limited to 150 two-person teams, the entry fee is $200 per team. Info: www.iceteam.com.
A few tips for fishing perch on the big lake:
• At early ice, look in about 25 to 35 feet of water.
• As the ice gets thicker and winter progresses, perch seem to go deeper yet. On any given day in midwinter, many perch get caught from about 32 to 45 feet or even slightly deeper. No-stretch line on jigging rods becomes a big plus.
• As winter wanes typically in February and March the jumbos might be in the 42-to 44-foot depths.
