February Fishing Reports and Forecasts
#1
Big brood-stock winter steelhead move into Oregon and Washington streams and spring Chinook aren’t far behind them. With recent high water a good number of steelhead were caught this weekend, two spring Chinook were verified also.

Sadie Dillards, age 9, experienced first hand what fishing is all about when she hooked, fought and landed this beautiful 14-pound 37-inch brood-stock winter steelhead. Sadie was fishing Big Creek (Clatsop County) with her Dad, Michael Dillards, on December 23, 2005 (see photo).

Columbia River: (39° F) Water temperatures are down and not much action for salmon or sturgeon has been reported yet. Bank anglers at Dibble and Prescott report only a few steelhead no Chinook.
Sturgeon: The Columbia below Bonneville Dam is producing some legal size sturgeon here and there and a few oversize also.
Sheilla Cannon at The Fishery (541-374-8577) said Sturgeon fishing has been slow.
“Saturday was the first day since the storm that we had a fair number of boaters, about 22 in all,” Cannon said. “From the few reports I got back there were only shakers, no keepers.”
Sturgeon retention is allowed from Bonneville Dam to Wauna — including the Willamette River and slough — Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with a 42-to-60-inch size limit.
Curt Melcher, Columbia River fisheries program manager for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, said sturgeon are slowly moving out of the cold flows of the Columbia and into the warmer waters of Willamette.
ODFW sport sampling January 22-23: Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam - 11 bank anglers sampled near Bonneville Dam and 4 bank anglers plus 5 boat anglers in the Longview area had no catch. 11 boat anglers in the Vancouver area released 20 sublegals.
2005 Smelt: Brad Cady with the WDFW said all indicators suggest this years Columbia River smelt run will not be a bumper crop.
“The cold water has delayed the run somewhat, but it is still early,” Cady said. “Since the cold weather has gone we have had some reports of activity in the lower river. On Thursday, January 20th a commercial boat reported ………
Willamette River: (Below Falls - 45° F / 7.01 feet). A total 84 winter steelhead passed over the falls on January 19, 2005, the highest daily passage of winters so far this season. Average daily passage in January was 10 to 18 fish.

Jack Howell of Newburg was the first angler to land a spring chinook in Oregon's Willamette River in 2004, a nice 25 pounder. Howell was back trolling with a diver near Meldrum Bar on January 24th. The springer fell to a bone-white Wiggle Wart with a red belly (photo pg 10).
Washington fishery managers are contemplating opening a section of the …..
Clackamas River: (At OR. City - 43° F / 24.87 feet / 2,430 dist.). So far the Clackamas winter steelhead fishery has been somewhat disappointing, steelhead are spread throughout the system but not in the numbers they should be. On January 21st, after the high water, a more consistent catch seemed to come into play and there were numerous reports of fish caught.
Robert Campbell at the Oregon City Fisherman’s Marine said anglers are now beginning to …..
Upper Clackamas: (At Estacada - 41° F / 12.20 feet / 2,220 dist.). Ray Akre at Estacada Tackle (503-630-7424) said the Clackamas River contains three distinct runs of steelhead at this time of year, the Eagle Creek stock, which returns November through February, the Clackamas River stock which comes in February through May, and the late summer stock which typically return May through October. Although this year the summer run steelhead are really late and, according to Akre, are still showing up at North Fork Dam in fairly good shape. PGE workers at North Fork continue to recycle summers down stream, many still containing eggs.
“As of January 25th we have not seen any of the Clackamas River stock brought in to the shop, and so far the Eagle Creek run has been ……
Eagle Creek: The creek provided very good fishing for winter steelhead last week after the freshet. With the good flows many fish were caught throughout the creek from Wednesday, January 19th through the weekend. As of January 25th a total of about 100 winter steelhead were in the trap at the Eagle Creek National Fish Hatchery. The hatchery plans to start spawning them on Wednesday. Sandy River Biologist Todd Alsbury said more brood-stock steelhead are now starting to show and he hopes it’s an indicator of things to come.
“Seeing as the wild brood-stock program was started in 2001,” Alsbury said, “we’re just now getting our first pure run of 3-salt brood-stock fish this season.”
“We plan to continue the brood-stock program on the Sandy even beyond the removal of Marmot Dam. A hook and line adult collection, similar to the one currently in place on the Wilson River, would allow us to continue the program after the dam is gone.”
Anglers would be recruited into the collection program to catch non fin-clipped fish, then transport the them in special live wells to a holding pond where they would remain until ready to spawn.
Anglers interested in participating in the wild brood-stock collection project can call Todd Alsbury at 503-657-2000 ex 231.
Tillamook: Dan Dixon at Tillamook Sporting Goods said the action is just now starting up and they’ve had some pretty good reports come in from both the Wilson and Trask rivers today, January 24th.
“The Kilchis remains slow at this time but it too is expected to pick up real soon,” Dixon said. “The river levels are looking really good, the South Fork of the Nehalem will be in good shape by the 25th and there are some big tides coming up this week.”
“We had a customer who caught a 16-pound winter brood-stock steelhead on the upper Wilson Saturday the 22nd. The angler said he lost a steelhead that was close to 20 pounds. The fish reportedly put up quite a fight.”
Nestucca River: Good numbers of both hatchery and native fish have moved in with recent high water. This is the first year of wild brood-stock winter steelhead returns on the Nestucca. Anglers can expect the brood-stock fish to start showing mid to late February. All are adipose fin-clipped and can be retained. Good places to fish this month include ….

Pro Guide Lee Darby (503-377-2719) said brood-stock steelhead started coming in on the Wilson River prior to last weeks high water.
“Some of the Alsea fish and a few natives were showing up and I think the best fishing this month will be found mainly ……
Sturgeon: Recent high flows into Tillamook Bay and on the Lower Siletz and lower Yaquina rivers have helped uncovered clams and mud shrimp from their beds. As a result sturgeons are now cruising the upper bays in search of these tasty morsels.
Crabbing has been slow due to all the fresh water poring into the bays. Just prior to the high water crabbing was good at Yaquina Bay. Fair at Nehalem Bay.

Washington —
Last weeks heavy rains took their toll on southwest Washington streams. But as of January 25th most rivers were coming back into shape and producing well.
Hatchery winter steelhead returns to Southwest Washington have been a mixed bag this season - some hatcheries are seeing increased returns while others less. The Cowlitz River Salmon Hatchery has seen good returns, nearly double of those experienced last season.
Cowlitz River: Best steelhead catches were found for the bank anglers at Blue Creek last week (January 17-23). The first spring chinook adult of the 2005 season returned to the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery last week. The fish returned on Thursday, January 20 and was recycled back downstream along with 141 steelhead adults to the Interstate 5 boat launch.
During the past week, Tacoma Power and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employees recovered 840 coho adults, 18 coho jacks, 178 winter-run steelhead and one cutthroat trout during four days of separator operations at Tacoma Power’s Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.

Lewis River: Dan Nahitka at Fisherman’s Depot said fishing will be slow on the Lewis this month.
“It’s going to be March, when the spring Chinook come in, that the fishing will really take off,” Nahitka said. “There are still fish available you just have put in the time.”
“We are nearing the tail end of our steelhead run. Although, I had a guy come in that fished today and yesterday (January 23rd and 24th) and caught two hatchery steelhead both days.”
Kalama River: Wane at Prichards Western Angler said recent rainfall raised the river 5 feet but it is almost back to winter time levels now.
“The river is in great shape, I heard of a 17 pound steelhead being caught the other day,” Wane said, “a few fish were taken today and …….
