Bigger anchor zone sought

[Image: z.gif] February 02, 2005 - Wolverine Lake Village Council members are discussing a way to bring additional water enjoyment of Wolverine Lake to residents by changing the location of an existing buoy.

The council talked about moving the buoy during its Wednesday, Jan. 12 meeting.

"We want to move one of the buoys on the lake," said village council president Karen Vickers. She said moving the buoy on the 265-acre lake would designate a smaller area for motorized watercraft to use, and create a larger area for residents to utilize the lake in a place with minimal waves.

"In order to do that, we have to get DNR (Department of Natural Resources) approval, because we are a public access lake," Vickers said.

The council authorized the village administrator to send a letter of request to the DNR asking for permission to expand a no-wake area on the lake by relocating the buoy. Watercraft are not allowed to anchor unless they are in a no-wake zone — indicated by buoys— and there are only a couple of designated areas to anchor during the daytime hours, since that is when high-speed boating is allowed.

Currently, residents utilize a "swimming hole" area in the lake that is the largest anchoring zone. Some want to extend that area so they are allowed to anchor and have additional space for swimming and other activities in the water that don't include using motorized watercraft.

Since Village Administrator Sharon Miller has received direction to continue pursuit of the buoy relocation, she will send a letter to the DNR shortly. Once the DNR receives the request, it will consider it, and send a letter of acceptance or denial.
