EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.

FRENCHMAN LAKE: There hasn’t been much change in conditions over the last week. There is still ice on the lake. Spring should be great for fishing. Call for updates. Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683.

TRUCKEE RIVER: Fishing has been pretty good here. A 4 1/2 pound rainbow was caught by an angler drifting nightcrawlers this week. Rapalas should also work well. The river is a little murky east of town. West of town it has been good. For fly-fishermen, Czech nymphing has been the most effective way to fish. Arlo Townsend caught and released a 27-inch Brown trout while Czech nymphing in the Verdi area last week. There is a Baetis hatch on warmer days in the afternoon, but most of the fish are eating nymphs. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing has been good to excellent. Trollers doing well in the Sutcliffe area, going down 10-20 feet, with Flatfish primarily. Also doing well with wiggle worts and Sting Kings. Some nice fish in the 8-11-pound range caught last week. Tom Bayles caught a 24-pound, 12-ounce fish with a black wooly bugger at the Nets on Sunday. His photo is at www.Crosbylodge.com. Water temperature is in the low 40s and fish are starting to get active.
From shore, try Rapalas early, then go to spoons or wooly worms with a sliding sinker setup as soon as the sun hits the water. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

MASON VALLEY WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA
HINKSON SLOUGH:
There were a lot of fish caught over the weekend. One angler caught 30 fish in the 12-17-inch range using midges with a floating line. The bigger fish are being caught on Olive crystal buggers with a stillwater line.

COOLING PONDS: The bass are very active. Wading the shoreline and casting down the bank has been very effective. A type two sinking line or an intermediate line on a six weight will do the trick. Bear Hair streamers and jig flies are working well. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

PACIFIC OCEAN: The giant squid are still bountiful in the waters off the Pacific Coast. Out of Emeryville last Friday, the Superfish reported landing 78 squid to 50 pounds for the 12 anglers aboard. The average squid weighed about 30 pounds. Best action has been about 25 to 30 miles from the Golden Gate. Emeryville boats will be running these trips as long as there is interest and the squid stick around. For information or reservations call (510) 654 6040.
The 2005 ocean salmon season will open on April 2 and the halibut fishing in San Francisco bay should commence around mid-April.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 3,700 c.f.s. Redding to Anderson, Calif. Fly-fishing for rainbow trout is good, Averaging 15-25 fish a day, this river is producing nice rainbows. Pheasant tails Nos.#14 -16 (olive and brown ), egg patterns and Micro Mayfly Nymphs working well. Fishing will keep improving as spring approaches and bug hatches increase.
Opening day of salmon fishing on the Sacramento River is July 16

Using pink Thunderballs. Also, bouncing roe. Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Kirk Portocarrero, (800) 670-4448 or (530) 221-6151.

WALKER LAKE: Fishing is good. Boaters reporting 20-30 fish per day. Trolling Tor-P-Dos, Flatfish and Apex in shallow water, 10-30-feet deep. Shore fishing is also good using Powerbait and casting Tor-P-Dos. Shore fishermen reporting 10-15 fish per day in the 2-4-pound range. Ed Jones, Bait and Tackle Shop, (w) 945-2525.
WILDHORSE: Ice is still 18-20 inches thick. The state park and Hendrick’s parking lots have been plowed. No-limit perch derby is March 12-13. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or email: dunns@direcway.com.

EAST WALKER: Flows are 21 c.f.s. This is as low as it has been all winter. Wait a couple weeks until irrigation starts and they raise the flows. The best time to fish the East Walker is when the flows are between 50 and 200 c.f.s. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
