Women interested in learning outdoor recreation skills will want to attend South Carolina's Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop scheduled for May 20-22 at the Clemson University Outdoor Laboratory. Registration deadline is May 1.
"Becoming an Outdoors-Woman is a program that provides opportunities for women to learn nature-related outdoor skills using a hands-on approach in a noncompetitive, non-intimidating atmosphere," said Steve Bates, education coordinator with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "This three-day weekend workshop provides introductory level courses for women ages 18 and older who have never tried these activities but have hoped for an opportunity to learn, or are beginners who hope to improve certain skills."
The registration fee of $150 for the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) covers food, lodging and all equipment needed for the classes. Pre-registration is required. The workshop will be held at the Clemson University Outdoor Laboratory, located on a peninsula of Lake Hartwell. The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop offers hands-on instruction in 26 different nature-related outdoor activities. Classes include: fishing, hunting, archery, kayaking, rock climbing, land navigation, boating safety and trailering, birdwatching, backpacking/camping, SCUBA, shooting skills, an ATV rider course and many more. Registrants select four classes of their choice. Following the workshop, participants are more knowledgeable about South Carolina's natural resources and are more able to enjoy the outdoors with their friends, family or on their own.
The workshop is offered through the DNR, and many sponsors support the effort to increase opportunities for women who are interested in learning more about the outdoors. Conservation organizations, outfitters, sporting goods manufacturers and retailers, and state and federal agencies provide instruction, equipment, educational materials and funding to assist participants in their pursuit of nature-related outdoor activities.
The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop will be held at the Clemson University Outdoor Laboratory, a unique conference facility in a natural setting ideal for learning outdoor skills. The complex is 5 miles from the Clemson University campus on a beautiful peninsula of Lake Hartwell. The rustic-style cabins, with restrooms, fit eight to 10 women in a comfortable camp-like setting.
