This past month’s wet weather has changed conditions at a couple of area waters, and thank goodness it is for the better. However, it is a good news/bad news situation. While the waters are being recharged, the muddy-murky water is making fishing difficult. Wildhorse is almost 50% full and Wilson is spilling in a big way. Northern Elko County has seen a lot of the precipitation in the spring so Mother Nature has evened things out. While the wet weather is helping to fill our reservoirs, hopefully it will also slow the draw down of them as their may be less need for irrigation.
[#990033]ANGEL LAKE[/#990033]
The road is closed at least until Memorial Day and with the snowpack and recent storms, don’t hold your breath. Even if the road is open, the lake may still be ice-covered
CAVE LAKE
Ice conditions are unknown, though at last report it was unsafe. However, with the recent warmer weather, the ice should be coming off soon, if it has not already done so.
COMINS LAKE
The trout are trying to spawn and so the bite is off. However, several anglers have had good luck with live crickets and caught fish in the two to three pound range.
[#990033]CRITTENDEN RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Fishing has been good here and flyrodders are doing well. Remember there is a one fish limit with a 17 inch minimum size and it is an artificial lure and fly water only. Once the water hits 60 degrees, bass fishing should start to improve. No reports on what lures or flies are working.
[#990033]DORSEY RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Dorsey has been stocked though there probably aren't any carryover fish from last fall. This is a popular place that isn't far out of town for families.
JAKE'S / BOISE RESERVOIR
This water has been stocked and levels are good. Fishing again is following the weather patterns. PowerBait and worms are working well. Spinners with dark rooster tails may work along the dam.
[#990033]JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Here’s a body of water we haven’t heard from in a while. Jiggs is still filling and has been stocked. With the whole lake being dry for a couple of years the vegetative growth provides lots of nutrients and the fish should grow quickly.
[#990033]MOUNTAIN STREAMS & LAKES[/#990033]
Travel not recommended.
[#990033]RUBY LAKE NWR[/#990033]
The boat ramp has been the hot spot lately, though the collection ditch is also producing a few fish. The best bet at the boat ramp is power bait and in the collection ditch (which is artificials only) bright spinners and rooster tails as well as beadhead wooly buggers are working. The water is still too cold for bass fishing.
[#990033]SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Water is flowing in anywhere between 550 cfs and 800 cfs. This big inflow of cold water is slowing the fishing down. The best time to hit South Fork is on a sunny day before a front moves in. The water temperature is in the 50’s and if we can get a week of warmer temps the shallows may get into the 60’s which appears to be the magic number for bass. Rick Jimenez reports that while you have to work hard for the bass here, nice ones are being caught and most of them are full of smaller fish, so plan on using crankbaits and minnow type lures. Remember, all bass must be released until July 1 st when the bass season opens. Trout fishing is slow to fair due to the water conditions and worms and powerbait appear to be working the best.
[#990000]WILDHORSE RESERVOIR[/#990000]
The island off of the state park boat ramp is almost covered meaning the lake is approximately 50% of capacity. The boat ramp is usable and the forecast for this lake is much improved over a few weeks ago. In fact, Wildhorse should receive its full complement of trout this year when as recently as 3 weeks ago, some of the fish were going to be put elsewhere. Hopefully good water conditions will prevail into the early or mid summer. Fishing is a little slow at this time due to the murky water, though a few trout are being taken. No report on what was used for bait. Also, with the shorelines that have been dry for the last couple of years starting to be inundated, there should be an increase in nutrients into the lake helping fish growth to speed up.
[#990000]WILSON RESERVOIR[/#990000]
The road is muddy and until we get a bit of a dry spell, 4WD is recommended. The reservoir is very full and it is spilling great guns so fishing below the spillway should be good once the flow slows down enough to fish it. The water is murky and cold so fishing is expected to be slow until it starts to clear.
