USFWS Proposal Would Allow Fishing For Gila Trout
#1
New Mexico and Arizona- It’s been nearly five decades since anglers could fish for Gila trout, a native fish found in high-altitude streams in the Gila River basin in New Mexico and Arizona. That could change, however, if a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) proposal to reclassify the fish from endangered to threatened, is approved. Two public meetings will be held in late June to answer questions and accept comments on the proposal

The change would allow for limited Gila trout fishing under a special rule. The USFWS would then work with New Mexico and Arizona to develop regulations to keep fishing from compromising Gila trout restoration efforts.
