The Thunder Bay Trails Association (TBTA) based in Alpena was recognized for its outstanding work to maintain a public trails system in Alpena County and the surrounding area. The group repairs, improves and grooms the trails for cross country skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the warmer weather months. It has a special volunteer agreement with the DNR for the Norway Ridge and Chippewa Hills pathways, and holds special events to promote outdoor recreation. The TBTA also holds several cleanups in the area to remove trash from surrounding state lands. "Thunder Bay Trails Association has done a tremendous job to provide countless recreational opportunities to the people of the Alpena County region," said DNR Director Rebecca Humphries. "This organization has a strong sense of its community, working with local organizations such as the Boy Scouts, and with local businesses. It has a strong partnership with the DNR and through our joint efforts, we help more people get outside in northeast Michigan." The Partners in Conservation Awards are given out to individuals, organizations and government officials who assist the DNR through volunteer work in the areas of conservation and natural resources management. Nominations are submitted by DNR employees. The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
