Virginia Launches Bass Stocking Study
#1
JAMES CITY COUNTY, VA—The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) biologists, in cooperation with volunteers from Virginia BASS and Concerned Bass Anglers of Virginia (CBAV), recently launched a study by stocking more than 100,000 juvenile bass into the Chickahominy River. The DGIF says the stocking effort is the start of a three-year study to determine whether stocking bass in large tidal systems is feasible. If so, the DGIF says stocking during and following a year of low reproduction could become an effective tool to improve fishing in tidal rivers.

Before being stocked, the fish, which had been purchased by the CBVA, were marked with a chemical at the DGIF's hatchery. The marking will assist biologists in measuring the survival rate of the stocked fish.

The DGIF has been monitoring fish populations in the Chickahominy for years and has extensive data to compare with the study.
