WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE GUIDE: There's more to do than watch and cruise
Love it or snub it -- you can't ignore it.
Not when nearly 2 million people could show up Saturday for this year's Woodward Dream Cruise.
Here comes another daylong, 16-mile panorama -- from 8 Mile to Pontiac -- of gleaming classic cars and roaring exhausts, tied to a week of sights and sounds from Woodward's cruising heydays of the 1950s and '60s.
Get ready for the 11th annual Dream Cruise by cruising with us to 11 cool spots on the route.
A few have admission fees; some are fund-raisers, like the $175-per-person Beach Boys concert. But for most of the Dream Cruise, you won't need reservations or a ticket. Just mix with the gearheads on lawn chairs, catch some classic rock 'n' roll and take in this rolling circus of chrome, fins, customized engines and Motor City history.
Here's a look at 11 of the coolest cruising events.
1. The Michigan State Fair: There are real horses at the fairgrounds at 8 Mile, and real horsepower at the big annual car show by the United Street Machine Association. But wait -- there's more, says State Fair General Director John Hertel.
"We have things you can't see on Woodward. At 9:30 on the morning of the Dream Cruise, you can see the U.S. Postal Service issue four new stamps of American cars -- right here. It's the only place, ever, you can get the first day of postmark for these," he said.
What's on these stamps? It's a secret. But -- shhhh! -- someone we know at the fair told us, "One is a 'Vette and one a T-bird." Got that? Fair admission is $9 ($4 for children ages 2-14; children younger than 2 are free); hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
2. Mural painting, Ferndale: On Saturday, watch an artist spend all day painting a 12-foot-by-60-foot cruising-themed mural at 9 Mile and Allen, one block west of Woodward. Commissioned by the city, muralist Dan Cascardo of Huntington Woods will use 10 gallons of paint to mark the birthplace of the Dream Cruise in 1995.
3. Car shows, Ferndale: Across Woodward on east 9 Mile, Ferndale's popular car show is back this year with 120 classics. Nearby will be Mustang Alley, with 400 vintage and late-model Ford pony cars.
4. North of 11 Mile, Royal Oak: At Royal Oak Ford, 27550 Woodward, Friday is the last day to buy this year's new collectible -- a Dream Cruise hang tag.
Yes, cruisers, it's time to ditch the fuzzy dice. Your rear-view should have the palm-sized, cardboard tag, emblazoned with the Dream Cruise logo, dangling from it. Granted, the tags are pricey, at $25. But the fee supports the nonprofit Dream Cruise and buys a way for cruisers to show that their ride really belongs in official cruise territory, the two right-hand lanes on Woodward. Sales are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., part of that time beside a live-cast of WOMC-FM (104.3).
5. West 12 Mile, Berkley: The annual Berkley Cruisefest will get rolling at 6:30 p.m. Friday near Woodward and run west to Greenfield. Last year, 25,000 people watched the parade of classic cars. Afterward, there will be kid-friendly dancing in the streets with live music, starting at 8 p.m.
6. 13 Mile, Royal Oak: For many, this is the Dream Cruise epicenter. At the southwest corner is Northwood Shopping Center, where cruisers park all summer. On Saturday, it's the site of the Grand Nationals, an oval of screaming 1/4 -scale gas-powered racers driven by local amateurs for charity. Also, there will be a Hot Wheels display and the chance for kids to race the die casts for prizes down on a 50-foot track.
At the northeast corner, in Memorial Park, Royal Oak restaurants will offer goodies. And there will be a big, new display by auto supplier Eaton Corp., open for the first time to the public. Eaton, the top Dream Cruise sponsor for the last eight years, will show off under-the-hood stuff like superchargers, to make you go fast on less gas. Plus, champion drag racer Mike Janis will sign autographs with his Eaton-sponsored Dodge Stratus IHRA Pro-Modified funny car, which, for split seconds, can go an estimated 400 m.p.h.
7. The Triangle, Birmingham: Chevy power will be on display Saturday in the grassy south-end triangle, where Woodward and Old Woodward meet. See a 50th-anniversary display of the engine that some say made cruising happen, the eminently soup-up-able, small-block Chevrolet V8.
8. Shain Park, Birmingham: The Beach Boys will get you humming "Little Deuce Coupe" when they perform cruise classics from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday at a $175-per-ticket fund-raiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. For $750, you can meet the boys in person at the Townsend Hotel, after their performance. On Saturday, view more than 150 classic Fords and Lincolns, also in Shain Park. 9. Troop salute, Bloomfield Hills: On Saturday, cruise to Bloomfield Hills for fun and a chance to support Michigan National Guard families. The Fox & Hounds restaurant, 39560 Woodward, will hold a daylong free salute to the troops with military concept vehicles and $10 cruise posters that support a fund for National Guard families. Live music will start at 8 p.m.
Also at Fox & Hounds will be a trio of weeknight fund-raisers combining flashy cars with gourmet dining. Each event is to start at 6:30 p.m. and costs $100 a ticket. Wednesday's Cruisin' Broadway feast with broadway and opera performances will benefit Michigan Opera Theatre; Thursday's Great Steak-Out will offer 1-pound steaks and disco music to help Lighthouse of Oakland County, and Friday's Lobster Bake with Motownesque harmonies by StreetCorner will aid the Mental Illness Research Association. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Pontiac's first African-American Car Show will be at Bagley and Orchard Lake, just southwest of the downtown. Look for Detroit funeral director O'Neil Swanson's beautifully restored 1940 LaSalle hearse and 1940 Packard four -door sedan. Scores of other classic cars will be displayed at four downtown lots along Saginaw Street and at one at Huron and Woodward.
11. Drive-in movies, Pontiac: What would nostalgia be without drive-in movies? Relive the memories from 9 to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday outside the Silverdome in Pontiac. Both nights will feature "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Grease" for $20 per car.
